Alright,I mainly hunt around old house places and most r just filled with iron junk.Up until recently Ive used the xterra70 and was used to its fast recovery, but thought I would get more depth with the SE.The problem is it nulls so much over the iron I feel like Im missing stuff.practically entire swings sometimes.Im running semiautosens and slowing swing way down but dont think its helping.Other than get the smallest coil possible what can I do???
Any advice from you guys that hunt these kinda place would b greatly appreciated.:rage:

open up the iron mask to all metal and switch to ferrous sounds..

For me...if I am creeping along slow enough...nulling is actually my friend:)..but this hunting style is not for everyone.

I love to listen for those faint silver chirps that pop out of the nulls..but again...it's not for everyone.

Any place that has a ton of iron means you will be hunting in an almost constant null if you have any iron (left side of screen) discriminated out. You will still get signals from higher conductive targets if they are more powerful than the iron signals.

Basically the hunting you are doing is just plain difficult. Smaller coils can help, but sometimes large coils will see things that smaller ones won't. It is very important to hit the area from different angles. Try setting a coin under a nail and hit it from different angles. You will immediately see what a difference that makes.

Many of us hunt ferrous sounds with nothing discriminated out; (I only disc out crown caps in the very lower right part of the screen). Then you can listen to a constant drum of low iron signals instead of nulls. I it still difficult but if you have been following the explorer forum(s) for any length of time you will see more stuff pulled out of iron than on by the rest of other detector brands combined. You have a good machine, but it still takes a lot of experience to pull the goodies from the iron. And even then an expert will still only get a small percentage of what is in the ground.

I agree in heavy filled iron sites all metall is very deadly but takes time and heart to listen to all the sounds the detector will make. But in time you learn to listen for that flutty coin sound. Also coins next to iron well bounce around and well not sound as good.

It takes time to learn what to listen for not matter how you run you se. Slow sweeps speeds will help alot. When in doubt Let digging be your friend.

i agree Bryce and im useing a explorer xs

I prefer using manual sensitivity in those situaltions as well as what the others said. Semi seems to really go shallow. In those situations you arent going to go 10" anyway and if you are too deep the machine is always going to grab that iron. I adjust my sensitiivity until my screen has movement between targets.... and like Bryce i move VERY slowly.

These are all great answers, and will give you finds, but it will be slow and noisey. I think this reenforces why many people have more than one detector. I love my EXII in almost all circumstances, but there are detectors that just do much better in iron rich sites where entire swings are nulled when using IM.

A small coil.. and fast on deep off.....you won't get the depth but less nulling and perhaps a better chance to grab a goodie amongst the iron.
