Here are two whatzits I have. The first I believe may be either the ear or mouth piece element from an old telephone, but I'm not sure. Here's the front...

....and the back....

This second whatzit I have absolutely no idea about. Found it in my front yard at about 1 1/2". It is marked on one side "PAT.AUG.16.87" and it's marked on the other side "PAT'D JAN.26.75". The little button on the right end swivels and puts you in mind of something that would go through a button hole.

The left end has clamp-like jaws, but as you can see they don't open very wide.

The closest thing I can come up with is something to hold a vest or coat closed. Anybody got any ideas?

You're right about the first whazzit. It is the transmitter from a telephone.

I've seen one of those clamp things before but I'll be darned if I can remember where.

Glad I could be of help. One point to note about viewing the older full page images for patents issued between 1790-1975. Firstly they can only be searched by either Patent # or by the current classification system.
Another point to consider is that to take full advantage of viewing the TIFF images you need to download the viewer recommended (FREE) that can be found at the following link, in the

Thanks Steve! I found (quite by accident) the Patent Office link you just provded. I spent a few hours yesterday looking for the item....I tried using both dates on the item and searched them as Application Date and Issue Date, without yielding a thing. So I started looking more randomly and soon gave up.
Just for my own education (may have to do this again!) - how did you search their site for this item? And I would greatly appreciate a copy of the patent info. Thanks again! HH Sarge

This one is easy to date as the date is stamped on the bottom. The left numbers are the month and year of manufacture.
