Ok you Ferrous Hound Users- Give us the facts-How deep will

the Ferrous Hound detect a flat(not vertical) nickel size piece of iron?(orientation important for a mag) How deep for very small pieces of iron? How deep for a soda can size hunk of iron? We have had a lot of discussion here as well as on the finders forum on this device but no one is giving us any data.

Hello George,
I'm not too sure about how deep the pi will respond to the items in question, I do know my Pi's detect deep enought for the goodies posted in the pic below.
Recovered these the past several months, The Rolex watch "may be fake or not?" all from the wet sand or surf.
The pi's get enough depth I don't need to dig any deeper.

The Ferrous Hound is not a PI detector! It is a device that works like a magnameter to tell you that the object you have detected is Ferrous or not before you dig. I think the firm is working on a PI, but this is not it.

detect a hortizontal nickel sized piece of iron. The issue is "Will the Ferrous Hound detect as deep as a P.I.?" If we detect a nickel sized piece of iron at 12" with a P.I. will the Ferrous hound detect it?. As the Ferrous Hound is going to be used with a metal detector it is an important question.
You see we have played around with mags before to see if we could use them to detect small pieces of iron that a metal detector could detect. Usually they were not very sensitive for very small items. One group of engineers I was working with could detect a iron washer at 15" with a mag only if it was vertical not hortizontal. Advertisements for portable mags- utility locators commonly use "PK" nails as the smallest pieces of iron detected with their locator. The "PK" nails could only be detected in a vertical position not a hortizontal position.
You see discriminating some surface iron helps with the Ferrous Hound but it has to have the same depth as a P I to be effective. Simply a lot of people question if the Ferrous Hound is as sensitive as a PI
for iron.

In my experience, the sensitivity of Ferrous Hound to ferrous targets is at least equivalent to PI sensitivities. As indicated on their website, Reeve Jones Pty Ltd is also well advanced in the development of a new PI and I've heard that the initial trial results, in terms of detection depth, are very very good.
