Old Home Sites

I went to a friends property a couple a weeks ago with my X-terra 705, and there are 5 old home sites there dating back to the mid- 1800's( Via map overlays,) and foundations.
Being new at it, i came up with some old iron nails but no coins. I was in all metal with the stock coecentric coil,DIS. at about 12.and the mineralization was mild.
I feel i probably should have been in discrim. pattern 2 with sensitvity up around 20..Shouldnt there be some coins there?
I am going back to the property to see if i have better luck. Also these sites have never been hunted before.
Any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks...

A couple of things .... most people are right handed, search the corner of the home to the right of the front door as it rounds the house. Search the "people magnets", and hump or hillside that looks inviting to sit on. Search from the back door to where the outhouse would have been. Swing your coil S.L.O.W.L.Y. Hunt going north to south, then east to west, then diagonally. A different direction will find things that are missed in other directions. Look for where the sidewalks would have been. Search under and around any large trees, picnicing was a common thing to do back then. Be sure that your target IDs are set right. Once you find your first coin at the site, you will have a clue how a coin should sound in that type of soil and you will begin to find more. Then go home, take pictures, and show us what you found! :) Good luck!

Ok here is what I would do at a place like that. I would run in patt 1 with 4 tones and dig everything that beep and that you can get a pp on.

I do not know what the lay out of this place is but if the old homes are with in 60 yards of a road most likely the coins will be between the house and the road. really work the shade areas of any old tree's there and the east an north sides of the homes.

Good luck

Some homes were along a creek with some stone wall to devert the creek in case of flodding and the one home site(farmland) was on top of,lets say a high pastuer. There were'nt any roads to speak of.This is definetly way out in the country.
I did get alot of beeps but thinking they were iron.I guess i need to dig everything for awhile until i understand why it detectected a target.
I really do appreciate your input on this subject matter.
I really cant wait until i hit my first old IH or whatever other coinage that comes to me...
Thanks as always....

In rural areas back before daily automobile travel people did not run to town on a daily basis. They were very self sufficient, a trip to town was an occasion; that may only have happened weekly or even less often if it was far and by horse and wagon.

So they had no need to have money in their pockets on a daily basis and little chance of dropping it.

That makes total sence.. Might get lucky and still find some or whatever else thst could be there... perhaps a ring...
