old park :surprised:

Hi, went to one of my favourite old parks today and it was gone, well the Walls and some trees where there, but all the soil, tot lot, the works all gone, the soil had been taken right down to, the clay, it's so sad all for the sake of football (soccer), this park had a lot of potential, it is (or was) in an area of great historical significance, just down the road is a Tudor mansion, (google speke hall), and this park was part of the grounds. medieval finds where coming out a little further down the road at the beach, monks used to row across the river Mersey to get away from persecution. i was getting muscat balls and old pottery as well as modern coins out of this site, i thought it would be safe from the football mad society of Liverpool, never mind that's progress.

also if you wish to google more info, try the child of hale, same area quite interesting......

sorry meant to include this as well just got permission to detect a front garden of a Victorian house, but not until may any decent finds i go 50/50 with owner, the house was taken over by the n.h.s. (national health service) and the garden has not been touched for decades, just the grass mown, there is no back garden, this has been turned into a car park, but you can see where the stables had been etc. that's a bit of good news any way, will let u know how i get on when time comes.

Find out where they hauled all the topsoil and see if you can detect it, unless it's on a new building site or private property.

Bernie,

it happens here in Holland also. From the most interesting areas they remove the topsoil. They bring it to a depot. I followed the trucks once but the grounddepot is surrounded by walls and fences.
While they removed the topsoil, my detecting mate found a 17th cent. silver bracelet and a Spanish coin.

Eric.
