Omeag 10" or 5DD In Iron

Ronk

Active member
Has anyone noted much difference using the 10 inch Concentric in iron compared to the 5 DD? How close to iron can the good target be and the 10 inch still detect it with a good signal compared to the 5DD?

HH!

Well even though I don't have the 5" DD to compare I'd think the 5" due it small foot print. But I think the deeper stuff will still be found with the 10". HH. Woodstock

The 5" is AMAZING in trash. Don't count it out on depth! Its not depth that matters. Its being able to "SEE" the target if its there.

Your right Bart but I didn't know the ten inch concentric or the five inch DD coil had eyes to see the target...lol but the smaller footprint of the five inch has got to be good in tighter heavy trash areas I'd have to agree. Don't get me wrong and I understand from what I read that the 5" is a killer coil with better than the average depth of most of the others it's size but they way it's being "hyped" it's like there's no need for another coil and that's not true, if it was then the ten and eleven inch would become obsolete. The stock ten inch concentric and the eleven inch DD have there reasons for being part of the coil lineup as well as the five inch. The five inch DD has it's benefits in high trash areas, the stock concentric is great for general coin shooting with a smaller coverage area then the eleven inch DD with it large footprint covering more. This is a wide range of coil combinations and there adding more to boot. They all deserve equal treatment along with equal hype cause even though I don't have a five inch DD the other two are coin killers as well.

There's a difference between trash and iron. Concentric can do better in some iron, like that old rusty flat iron, than a DD, as it falses less. We've been hunting a lot of ghost towns this year, and they redefine the definition of trashy and iron infested sites. The 5" DD on my F75 has a tendency to overload very easy (even a coin on the surface will overload it). Whereas I don't see that same problem with the 10" coil. I don't have the 5" DD for my Omega, so I'm not sure if it also overloads easily, but in a major iron/trash infested area it's a PITA :)

Great post ! I think you correct when you say "ones persons trash is another iron" or "ones persons iron is anothers trash". Well you didn't really it that way there is a difference and the terminology or "trash" should be defined better. To me bottle caps are what trash is and when they hit they sound like coins and even will fool their ID. And some detector users spend years trying to find a detector what will discriminate and ID them better and I advise them it's a lost cause. Every manual tells you that and every detector I've used can't tell the difference from a bottle cap to a coin but they still complain. And some area trash like bottle caps are a good thing cause it dates the sights.
But there's a real difference between the two. Happy Trails, Woodstock

I recently hunted a 113 year old fairgrounds and for me the 10" concentric did not do well in the trash and iron. Yes, it did a better job on the old steel type bottle caps, but with all the various kinds of trash this old grounds had, well, over a two hour period I never dug a good target. The 11" was finding a few good targets, but on this site, the 5" baby was the way to go. HH jim tn
