Omega 8000 and 8500

I seldom ever see posts on these machines anymore. Wondering if 8000 users have moved on to different machines and also wondering why the 8500 is talked about so little. Does the 8500 have issues or what?

I've got an Omega 8000 and really like it. I'm frozen in right now waiting for spring. Never used a 8500 some have commented about the audio though

8000 Version 4, of which I owned four of them. That was a better, and more 'fun-to-use' Coin Hunting model than the modified IDX Pro, MXT Pro and XLT's and others I had during that period.

I used the standard or 8" round Concentric coils in open, sparse-target areas, but mounted the round 5" DD coil often to work in and around metal structures, trash, etc. I had hopes of the 8500 being an improvement, but I spoke with three dealers and two 8500 users who disliked it for many reasons. To me is was a dud! I wish they would have continued to produce the 8000, and I am still looking for a creampuff condition V4 to add to my detector arsenal. Some of those 8500 users I spoke with went back to the 8000 themselves. A great Coin & Jewelry Hunting detector, and better than its replacement.

Monte, I saw you had a 8000 V5 on offer in the classifieds. In what way did you like the V4 more ? In other words, what did you find so desirable about the V4 ? Also, what did you didn't like about the 8500 ? Thanks.

also would like to know how much difference between the v4 and v5 is Thanks Mike not hijacking you post just thought we could get both answers here hope you don't mind

Hi Monte,

Same kind of question as from dfmike and BarryL.

I have an Omega 8000 v6 and a Gamma 6000 v1.

Comparing them for EMI/RFI at moderate-to-high sensitivity settings (say, above 80), the Omega v6 is quiet while the Gamma v1 chatters away.

With sensitivity on both machines set at 90 ...

... the Omega v6 (stock 9x5 coil) gives 9 inches on a silver dime, while the Gamma v1 (NEL Sharpshooter coil) gives 7 inches.

... the Omega v6 gives 10 inches on a clad quarter, while the Gamma v1 gives 8.5 inches.

Those are on air tests, and getting a solid, repeatable signal. Both machines could go another 1.5 inches for an "iffy" signal.

(Probably a Gamma later version could do better than this version 1.)

It sounds like maybe you prefer the Omega version 4, and I'm wondering about that.

Maybe V4 is just hotter and perhaps more noisy ? I still see lots of brand new 8000's for sale but the prices remain quite high despite the more recent 8500.

Hello Everyone........I own 6 detectors right now but my favorite machine for my kind of hunting is the Omega 8000 v-4 fitted with the NEL Hunter coil.
Now I will say that you can have some problems with EMI around power lines or an electric fence.
The light weight of the unit even with the Hunter coil on it, means I can hunt for several hours at a time pretty easy and I'm 63 years old.
I've owned mine for 5 years now and of all the detectors I've had over my 37+ years of detecting the Omega is rated #1 in my book!

I had a version 4 and then a v 5 8000. The v 5 was far quieter then the v 4 and slightly deeper. I traded my v 5 in on a Omega 8500. No emi issuers at all with it and found it to be even deeper then the v 5 8000 I had. Un-fortunately, it falsed pretty bad. In a trashy park setting or iron laden spot there was just to much falsing for it to be enjoyable. I keep hoping I will hear the falsing situation has been resolved, but as of yet, not. Am very tempted to buy another 8000, but would like to know it was a V 6. HH jim tn
