Omega 8000 giving strange readings?

Hi,

Had my omega out in the back yard today, started finding a few coins..I'm beginning to understand the Canadian coin sounds and then I ran into a problem.
I got a nice hit around the quarter or silver tid setting(95-99) so I got real excited and started to dig,got down about 7" and lone behold I found part of a rusty axe head about 3"x 4" iron chunk, the Omega did not tid the iron??
I also have found that it does this on old rusty nails with large balls of rust on the nail head when their deep...like 8" to 9" ?
My settings were 11"DD coil, Sens at 80 disc set 16... in tone d2 and GB showed 65 and I have no EMI or soil mineral problems.....got me stumped, can anyone explain why?

Thanks, Bob

Bob: DD coils frequently will read larger rusty iron as a quarter, half or dollar coin, especially when the signal from the coil drops off the edge of the iron. Coencrentic coils will some times do the same. Slow your sweep speed down to a crawl, this will some times give you a more accurate ID. some times not. however slow sweep speed should give you the size of the target. usually larger than a coin. This is a habit of DD coils, you will get use to it and learn to tell the difference most of the time.

Hi Steve,

Ya I'm very new to the metal detecting world...this is my first detector so it's a big learning curve but I'm slowly starting to understand how the Omega 8000 talks to me.
It's a great machine and fairly easy to learn on.
Most importantly I'm enjoying my new hobby and hope it's something I will continue to do for a long time.
The forums are great tools to learn on.....very knowledgeable people!!
I will put your knowledge to practice....:)

Thank you

In pin point you should be able to size the target 3"X4" bigger than a coin... old square nails will be out at 16 in disc. bent one`s a little higher....but if you relic hunt 3"x4" or an ax head it`s a good thing.
You might be new to detecting ...but you are learning...see you are learning the Iron Lesson lol....HH

when two other dealers taunted me to check one out and let them know what I thought of it. Great detector for many applications ... keeping in mind that there is no such thing as a 'perfect' detector.

Once you learn the strengths and weaknesses of any detector, you will be able to get the best performance out of it. Let me share my findings with the Teknetics Omega:

I never use the tr-on 3-Tone audio ID. If doing some urban coin hunting for "flash money" in playgrounds and such, I usually use the 'd4' 4-Tone ID for the audio 'alert' on potential 5

Gary,

Thanks for the tip on the pinpointer..and your right,I've noticed with Disc set at 16 you do get a few bent nails show higher and I've dug them...lol.

Thank again,
Bob

I live in The southern tier of N.Y. so we don`t find many Canadian coins here all though i found an 1888 Can. large penny the hit very high on my Whites 6000 Di Pro SL 30 years ago.
The older Can.penny`s reg. size hit where our pennys do...but the newer Can. penny`s i don`t know.

Ever sence i got my first Fisher CZ 6/6A machines early 1992 to sell ,and they had that iron grunt on the audio...and just pulling the coil to me as I sweept over what i thought was a good target.. in 0 Disc.and then hearing the grunt at the end that saved a lot of diging.
A lot of people said that the CZ line loved the iron, and rang up like a good coin/target...what good machine don`t ?...but just knowing what you call (Quick -Out ) made the CZ line a very hot Coin machine that i still enjoy...and realy did not dig very much iron with that them CZs
I had the G2 it grunted and i`m looking forward to hearing that sound with my Omega....coming from old BFOs,TR,and threshold machines...i like workin into the noise.HH
