Hey all,
Long time T2 user but I've decided to try out the O8000. It arrived yesterday and I assembled it and tested it inside the house. Well, I could turn it on inside which I can't do with my T2!
I went out this morning and worked a small area I had gotten quite a few coins from. I ran the sensitivity full bore (most of the time, lowered it when there was tons of iron) with no problems. Discrimination at 18, d2 program, GB 65 (It was cake to gb) and the 11" DD coil (Though I have all 3 coils). The first thing I noticed was how much softer the iron was compared to the T2. That was welcome, they clearly lowered the iron volume. I ran it a little with 1 discrimination and it didn't give me a headache like the T2. The signals sounded a bit smoother than the T2, hard to describe. The machine ran so quiet but there was lots of iron in the ground so I heard the occasional signal break through my discrim. I absolutely love the controls, the detector is clearly geared towards a coin hunter. I never could have guess this before as the last two detectors I've had (T2 and Nautilus IIB) were more designed for relics, though are great coin detectors.
I really enjoyed being able to drop the discrimination to 0 or All metal to check a target, which I did time and time again. I only did that occasionally on the T2, as I had to switch things around (between AM, changing sensitivity and disrim) - OK, it's simple on the T2 but so damn simple on the O8000.
I got an iffy signal in iron and I dug around 3 inches and it was off to the side, way off. It was a coin that was badly decomposed (but not that old - 70's or so). It didn't sound much better out of the ground than in in hindsight. But, as I said, I had been through this area MANY times before and it skipped me. So far, my first dig was a coin! I moved to another area I had not really been through. I got a hard signal and it said 5" or so. I could tell by now that is was deeper. There wasn't much iron there. I dug down 6" (I measured) and pulled a coin that I still can't identify. It is soaking in olive oil right now. it appears to be from the 1700-1800's is my guess and I'm not sure it's even German. It says "Entime" on one side and "Fra"...."que". Maybe french or Latin? Was my second or third dig!
Some kids came up to watch and sort of bug me but I took it in stride and was actually playful towards them. I dug a very thin coin at around 3-4" and saw it was very old so didn't try to clean it. I just soaked it in soapy water and can clearly make out a date - "1780"!!! My oldest coin. Mind you all, this is my first time out with this detector. Yeah, I am pretty sure my T2 would have found these coins, but it's a nice omen. Speaking of which, I found around 3 bullets, 1 spent and 1 live machine gun cartridge. The bullets don't come in that great but think I had been through the area with my T2. I must have just missed them.
Anyway, 8 coins, the best results ever at this spot and to be honest my best day every metal detecting (actually 3 hours). I dug lots of targets to get a feel for the machine. Pull tabs were a bit all over as was bottle caps but when they are ripped and crushed that will happen. The detector locked on to targets much much better than my T2. Clearly the T2 has a bit more power and doesn't react to iron as much. I was fooled by iron with the O8000 but rarely am with the T2. Guess it's partly the frequency.
The detector has a nice feel to it. It doesn't look like an expensive machine but it's not exactly cheap either, but closer looking to lower middle price. Again, I absolutely love the controls, it is made for coin hunting and now I know why after using it. I will probably stay in d2 mode as the coins here hit at nickel range up to 80 or so and there are too many different kinds to worry about remembering them with tones. I also liked using 2+ on the T2, so this is no big change for me, just sounds slightly different. I didn't use the arm band and wish I had as my forearm was not snug in there like on the T2. The T2 forms (it's metal) to fit your forearm and this one is unbendable plastic. The had to stabilize the machine with by holding the handle tight. I liked holding the T2 better (slightly better balance) but will use the arm strap next time, I think that will fix things.
I'm excited to go out again this evening. The machine is incredibly stable, what a relief after the T2. I think I'll sell my T2 now, even though I know it's a bit deeper. But in my first day of hunting I found a 6" deep old coin and there just aren't many deep coins where I hunt. I prefer the O8000 as it seems almost as fast but dare I say, a little better in iron. I can pick out sounds better, clearly. It's easier to run in iron and this was just my first day of hunting. A simpler machine for sure but I thought it's like comparing an little older muscle car (T2) to a little cheaper but up to date sporty car (O8000). Not the best analogy but I could clearly see the 3 years of technological advancement and change of design (controls) at work.
