Omega 8000

Does anyone else have a problem with their omega just shutting off? I look at the knobs and they are both on but the machine is off. I have to turn the knobs to the off position and then back on again to get it back on.

Is this an issue that I need to send it back?

Thanks

Mine does not do that but sometimes after I use the pinpoint button it stays in the pinpoint mode until I shut it off and then turn it back on.Other than that I really like it - but I have had it for only 3 days -anybody else experiencing this? Like you I am wondering if I need to send it back.

I have not had any of the problems you guys are experiencing. Mine has worked perfectly. I would definately contact First Texas and tell them about it and they will probably advise you to send them in for repair after they try their troubleshooting steps.

I was thinking of sending it in but I really like the machine and do not want to be without it.... :(

I guess if I want to get it fixed I will have to send it in.

Thanks

I have had no problem with mine turning off suddenly.

Mine does go into AM sometimes whether pinpointing or not. Most of the time after pinpointing. I can even change pitch when it does it so it is really in AM. Sometimes it stops by itself and sometimes I have to turn it off. It goes from beep beep to zip zip. So far I live with it but plan to send it off this winter as I hate to let it go right now.

With 2 of us having the problem it might be something First Texas might want to look into. It is something I can not make it do so I am afraid if I send it in it won't do it for them. I have noticed it seems to do it more in the really high EMI places where I have to run sensitivity low to keep from chattering. I have tried to turn up the sensitivity in those places to force it to do it. In places where I can run sensitivity 70 and above without chatter it doesn't do it as often. That is why I think EMI might be responsible. It might be a software glitch? If I can figure how to make it do it maybe they can figure how to fix it.

I don't know if I can figure it out but I do notice that it is usually after I have pinpointed something. I then go back to swinging and wonder why I am not hearing anything. I look at the screen and it is blank. I look at the knobs and they are still on.

I have to turn it off and then back on again to get it to work.

I've only had my O8 out on two hunts and so far no issues like described above. I'll take it out again for a few hours this afternoon, and if I see any of the reported behaviors I'll post (and send it to FT for a health check, but so far, knock on wood, so good).

Blacktoe - your probably right about it being something First Texas should look into since there are a few newer machines here having similiar problems. Also you state it seems to happen at spots you run low sens, thats the same with mine, the 2 hot spots I have had it happen to me I am running sens at 40-45 and my machine does it at least once in a 2 hour period. But mine has only done it after pressing and releasing the pinpoint button. As yours does, mine will revert back to disc mode shortly or I just turn it off-on again.I think I will wait a bit to send mine in tho as I am enjoying it to much right now.

If its happening after pin pointing..It there a chance when u push one button, its somehow transfering pressure over to the other one?maybe setting it off?Im not familiar with the omega series so im just guessing.I hear ya about not wanting to be without..My Se had a problem for over a year ,I finally sent it in when i Got my E-trac.I didnt want to be without a machine ,so I just dealt with the issue.Hope you get this fixxed. Those machines seem to be pretty Sweet.Good Luck..HH

It is not buttons that turn it on and off, it is knobs that you spin. It's frustrating because I think I am not getting any hits and then look at the machine and it is off and I have to retrace my steps again.

I know this is really basic, but check to make sure the batteries and the prongs inside the battery compartment are FIRMLY touching. I find the FTP products to have very loose battery holds, except for the BH's that have the dangling connector like you used to see in a transitor radio. I had a newer Radio Shack model one time where I had to use a small screw driver and pop out the progs that 'held' the battery and made the connection. For some reason they were pressed down, away from the top of the 9 volt, so depending on how I moved the unit, the lose battery caused the thing to shut off.

I've had similar probelm with a Fisher unit.

Again, very basic, but I've had the same thing happen twice.

Hope that helps.

(and for the record, I do not have an Omega, just lurking here on this forum as I contemplate buying one).

Well I do see a trend here. No one wants to let their Omega go even tho we have a small problem we don't want to send it in just yet. I have a F4 and a Ace 250 for backup and still don't want to be without my Omega.

Who will be the first to send theirs in?

"pry it out of my cold dead hands" ain't it? :)

blacktoe I agree. I don't want to give it up. I find myself using it more than my x70. I just like the feel of it and the look and everything about it except that it sometimes turns off.

I have thought about the batteries and the connectors as I have seen other detectors have that problem, but...why would it "fix" itself just by turning the knob off and then on again. Not shaking it or anything. Perhaps like you said it could be from when I place it on the ground and that slight bump shifts the batteries.

I will look into it today and see what I can find out.

I really hate to turn it in!!!

If your machine isn't working properly..why not get it fixed.
Getting it repaired may even make it work better. Possibility your not getting full power if it is shorting out.
F/T may not be aware of the issue either........Has anyone called Felix ???????

One other thought..........what kind of batteries are you using ?? Not all batteries are the same size........Milimeter or two difference. This has caused issues in other detectors.

I use Duracell or Everyready Gold and mine does it with either battery tho I think your were addressing Lafatalife on her turning off problem.

It looks like I might be the first to call FT. I haven't detected for about a week and went out yesterday and my Omega did it many times. Again I couldn't make it do it, It just did it. It did seem that if I bumped the coil against my foot sometimes it would stop. It also seemed to do it more with low disc. I was able to stop it one time by turning disc over 40 but I don't know for sure as it might just have stopped on it's own. I also noticed pinpoint does not work when it acts up. I tried to detect in AM when it did it and no pinpoint. I am still trying to figure out how to make it do it so I can tell FT how. I am afraid it won't do it for them.

I don't care what machine you use sometimes some have problems and I am not disappointed in my Omega nor blame FT for poor quality control. I am sure this machine checked out when built. When it is not acting up it is so stable and locks hard on a target without numbers jumping around.

I wonder if a bad coil could cause this?

I only suggested batteries as a possible problem based on other machines that have Battery fit issues..and they were not Fishers , or at least," I don't think so". I know my F75, and T2 lists the batteries that are suggested for use.. If I read the post right The Omega uses 9 V.............????????????????

I did not know that either........
