Omega Ground Balance

all iron

Member
Ive seen some posts recently that have sparked the following questions.
I'm still new to the Hobie and especially to the Omega.

Question1:
If your machine can be ground balanced, why would you not?

Question 2:
If you turn on the machine and leave it at it's factory default of 82, What are we telling the machine about the ground?

Question 3:
If you run the machine with the mineralization on the plus side, what are we saying about the ground?

Question 4:
If you run the machine with the mineralization on the minus side, what are we saying about the ground?

Question 5:
what do each of these settings do to the performance of the machine? IE: depth and sensitivity to targets?

Most of my hunting is in parks, school yards, farm fields, abandoned homesteads when i can find them.
Right now i always ground balance as soon as i can find a spot on the ground that i feel is free of "targets"
most of the time, ground balance is about 65 here in Indiana.

Im sure there is something else i'm forgetting

Most all your questions can be answered here.

Hope this helps

Not seeing that info in the manual :(
But i'm a little slow.
I'll keep looking :geek:

I cant remember what advantage running the machine higher or lower does for sure but I know some people like to do it. I will try to find that info out for you. I use the fast grab I think its called and go on my way.

Always GB! It give you better depth and sensitivity to your machine. It cancels out the ground and allows the machine to behave like the ground is not there so to speak. It can concentrate on the actual targets and not all the other things in the dirt. You need to GB often! Especially if you change ground types. The the soils and composition will change. You don't have to, but to get best depth you will.

Hope that sorta helped. I will try to find the other info for u!

1. Ignorance or stupidity. LOL
2.Nothing. It is when you ground balance the machine that you are telling it about the ground.
3. The response to minerals or hot rocks in the ground is going to be positive. When you lower the search coil to the ground, the detector will get louder in response to the minerals in the ground.
4.The response to minerals in the ground is going to be negative. The detector will be noisy until you put the coil to the ground.
5.Adjusting for positive response (see #3) can make the detector more sensitive to smaller targets when in all metal mode, but it will be noisier. Adjusting for a negative response makes hot rocks sound different than a metal target so the user is able to know the difference between a good target and a bad target. Positive or negative response settings are usually used for prospecting purposes. Since the omega has Target Identification numbers in all metal mode, it seems to me that the best thing to do is ground balance it and have fun hunting.

These answers are by no means conclusive. Monte or some other knowledgeable person may break it down better but these are my answers to the questions as I understand them, with my limited knowledge on the subject.

Of my two main detectors, one saves last settings and the other, the Omega, must be g b each time. I am one, however, that doesn't always g b each time for a couple of reasons. One. I may be hunting a modern era tot lot or school yard and am not concerned with maximum depth. Just shallow recoveries of clad. Secondly, I frequently hunt very trashy spots and often times cannot find a clean place to get a good accurate g b. When this happens, I either leave the detector in the pre-set 82 g b for a bit, or manually g b to what I think I know is the usual g b number(s). HH jim tn
