Omega loves coins on edge

Just got a new Omega last week. I've mainly used the 6x11 DD coil. I can't believe how many coins this thing picks up that are vertical in the ground. I noticed a dime can look 4-5 inches long on direction and normal width across while pinpointing. But they hit hard on the VDI without jumping around. Pretty cool stuff.

Very true, I dig quite a few coins on edge and they generally hit pretty good. I've gotten them on edge down to around 4" or 5".
If memory serves correct, if they are shallower you will get a double beep?

I have not heard a double beep except for surface finds. The coins on edge just have sounded like a clean hit and a bit oblong. I've also picked up on a few coin dumps. Fun machine.

I came up with the following by doing a little searching:

If, however, the coin is on edge, the surface receiving the electronic transmitted signal is very small and will not generate the same response as when it is flat. Coins on edge will not generally provide the same TID as those same coins when flat. They are usually lower in reading, and shallow ones may even "double beep". The deeper the coin on edge, the more variance there will be. A good excercise might be to air test some coins at various angles and at different distances from the coil, to better understand how that angle and depth will effect the response of the detector.

Shallow targets can double beep:

Note that a coin close to the surface can give a double beep sound,
but it is regular and repeatable. Raising the coil an inch or two will restore the single beep on surface targets.

And from a metal detecting glossary:

DOUBLE BEEP - Two positive audio signals in rapid succession generally associated with elongated ferrous objects such as nails or coins on edge.

Anyway, it appears to not be consistent and is often depth dependent. If you do get a double beep it will be interesting to see if it is indeed a coin on edge. Double beeps confuse me at times as you are not sure if it's two targets (initially).
