Left the house at 5:30 wondering where to go for a couple of hours of hunting. Thought about the old Navy military housing site and reckoned that might be an apropos spot on Memorial Day. Left my SUV parked beside a big oak tree to hopefully help keep it a few degrees cooler and fired up the Omega under the overhanging branches. Right off I recovered a 2" deep wheat cent and a few minutes later a 44 Mercury dime, also from about 2." Those 2 targets along with a couple of Memorial cents set me off to hunting under and around several other large old trees along that particular street.
Most of my keeper targets this morning came from under and out and around these big old oaks. And, most targets were fairly shallow. The what appears to be a gold filled ring was barely under the dirt and 1 wheat cent was right on top of the ground. The 62 Washington quarter was about 3" deep and the 48s Rosie was maybe 4." Nickels were pretty bouncy this morning, maybe do to the dry ground, but did manage 1 43p war nickel. Ended up with 6 wheat cents from 1934 to 1951.
I was running the Omega with a G B of 61, disc 0, d4 tones and 99 sen for a while and in the trashier spots, 75.
Everyone have a great and safe Memorial Day. HH jim tn
