Omega

I just bought one,not here yet, what is the best coil to use for coins around old buildings and parks?I'm excited.Mike D.

My opinion mdowling is the 5 inch dd coil and the std 10 inch elliptical coil since i hunt the large park and camp ground by me these have worked the best in that environment...Oh and congratulations on the Omega for you made a very wise choice...Markmac

I am 100% with Markmac when it comes to prefered search coil selection for the Omega. I use the stock 10" elliptical concentric for most general use and fairly open area searches, but am quick to pick the 5" DD for working in and around brush, close to structures and metal objects, and dealing with nails and other dense litter.

I keep all my coils on spare lower rods for quick change when needed, too. I spent the entire month of September, and the tail end of August and start of October, using nothing but the 5" coil on my Omega. I had excellent performance and got better depth of detection than most would imagine. Just match the right coil for the needs at the site, use all the Sensitivity you can handle, the least Discrimination you can tolerate, and don't get carried away with a too-fast sweep speed.

Your new omega is one heck of a value and a great performer.

Monte

You're gonna love the Omega it's a fantastic coin machine: very responsive and picks through trash well with the stock 10" coil. Lot's of good advice here, but I'll add my 2 cents. If in the beginning you're going after coins and perhaps chance on a larger gold ring; I'd suggest you concentrate on the stock coil as you learn the machine. Set the discrim on 70 or a bit lower to keep down the EMI, then crank up the discrimination to max which notches out everything but dimes & quarters. I'd then notch back in nickels and set my tones at D-3 or D-4 to determine which tones setting you like best.
Yes, you will miss some things but you'll still get good depth and will increase your confidence with the Omega as you'll have plenty of coin finds and you'll be mastering your pinpointing with it. As time goes on you can certainly return and search these sites with the other coils and learn their pros & cons. The goal is to learn the machine and it will come to you quickly; I would consider headphones at all times, the Omega hits hard on coins but you'll get those faint high tones (if in D-3 or D-4 tone select) on deep targets. Then watch the strength meter to give you an idea on depth and the FE (iron) bars to see how clean the signal is and decide if you want to pinpoint & dig it or not...you can always note it and check it in the future. Dig those 89-90 and watch the quarters pile up and those 83-84 on your dimes; Nothing succeeds like success so, my tips are aimed at high percentage coin finding...Best Success!

make sure your head phones have a volume control there is none on the Omega but other than that best detector Ive ever owned....and I have had some high end ones...this thing loves dimes.

I love the 11" DD, Goes deep and even seems to work good in trash, after learning to hear the difference between bottle caps and quarters.

I bought my Omega August 22 and since then I used the standard 10" the most. However after having read several posts and other information I tend to use the big 11" DD more and more.
I believe the omega is capable of "seeing" objects even though there is Iron nearby. Thus I trust my MD when using the 11" DD. The dept is the reason for using it then.

For starting with the omega however I think that the standard 10" or (when available) the 5" 'Sniper' coil are better to begin with just to learn to know the MD better.
Starting with the 11" might result in endless digging because of the more difficult pinpointing..

I've used the 5" just twice up till now. I always thought that depth is minimized when using a small coil.
However, as Monte already said: "the 5" coil on my Omega. I had excellent performance and got better depth of detection than most would imagine".; this is exactly the same as I read about the other day. I will use the sniper coil in the near future just to have this experience for myself.

I always set my Omega this way:
Disc on AT
Turning on the MD -> SENS up til I hear the noise.
GroundGrab pressed I "pump" the MD between the ground and 20" up until the Ground reading is "stable" (the reading will differ of course depending on the soil and conditions)
DISC clockwise till 00 (no discrimination)
SENS to maximum (no scattering sounds) (sometimes I change FREQ to have the MD silent)
TONE to D2 ( in this setting Iron sounds different from all other metals)
Now I still hear the Iron which gives me information on ground conditions. Rusty Iron tends to sound like other metal in one way of swinging over it. Just turn a bit and swing again, if its ironish, you'll hear it but you would NOT have when using DISC.
I dig up every stable beep with the higher tone (the not-iron tone).
