If my detecting abilities were the same as my digital photography skills, that would explain why I never find anything deeper than 7 inches. Unfortunately, that

When I am in in the right frame of mind I only hunt for those nickel signels and it seems to me that most of the time it will read a 10-05. If it is worn a lot it will be maybe 09-05 or 10-04 but I can usually call it most of the time. Nickels have a really smooth tone and also the ID moves around less, even when they are deep. I have found a few gold class rings when searching in the Nickel mode. I can beIt just takes a lot of practice digging those tabs to get the sound figured out.

I would have no problem digging them pull tabs to find 2 buffalo nickels. I still have not found any <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry">

And I'm definately willing to dig another 11 to get a couple more. buffalo nickles are awesome!
Keep digging William, yours are comming soon!

After I got the hang of the "nickel mode" I then started finding "V" nickels and also Shield nickels. Of course the area has to be old enough. I feal like if the area has produced some silver coins from about the 1860's and up, then there is a high chance of the older nickels being there because most hunters are looking for silver primarily. I think they are great also but most I dig are in really bad shape. I will take a few group pictures of some and post them tomorrow night.

Todd,
The area that I have been hunting is just full of pulltabs. But, I also feel that most people in this area are ignoring possible nickel targets for this reason. I have changed my setup to black out the region where nickels fall and then use the learn function (along with the X1 probe) open a small window for nickels. I sampled a wide range of nickels, including buffalo, war and modern nickels.
Since then my nickel finds have increased dramatically. Yesterday I dug 8 nickels and only 3 pulltabs in this park that has been heavily hunted. You can progressively open up the nickel area on the screen if you are willing to dig more pulltabs.
Just a thought. HH,
