One Way Wheat

TURNMASTER

Active member
One Thin Dime and several wheats, a razor blade and some marbles. There was eventually a Memorial in the hole with the razor blade and pull tab.

The Barber is the oldest coin I have found on this property and the wheat is one of 8 or 10 1919 coins from here, unusual for me.

One of the Wheaties hit from one direction only. it was only about 2 inches deep, just under what one might call sod. It was one of the newer wheaties but crusty enough.

I am finding that crusty copper pennies give troublesome ID and location, anybody else get that some thing. This one should have been clearer. I re-swept and the ground was not a total null.

Nice Barber dime and nice wheats and marbles. I have gotten one-way wheats before but they were usually pretty deep or mixed in with something else. Maybe the fact that yours was crusty gave it that type of signal. Another thing that also screws me up is shallow clad dimes - they sound better and deeper then I expect. The finding of the razor blade is a good warning for everyone to wear gloves when digging. HH!

Hey, Jeff -- I do get some very cruddy hits on wheats many times, sometimes even shallow ones. Wheats seem to be among the worst-hitting coins for me oftentimes. Jumpy IDs numbers (especially FE numbers) all over the place...and yes, it's often the ones with lots of hardened dirt/junk on them...

I did move IM from 22 to 21 but I have seen this several times before. My goal was to see if I could combat the vast amount of nails. It did seem to help and wala the Barber. In a spot I had swept with the 705 and the SE, very narrow spot where it could be heard. The coin was only 5" dp but the soil here is starting to dry out a bit. That is a good thing for me. I believe I get better depth, less falsing and better target acquisition with a more moderate amount of moisture in the soil.

I also dug a target that radiated a signal in every direction for about a sq ft, it was a clamp of some sort. Thin spring steel (chromium content) about 1 inch diameter. Once that was gone the surrounding couple of sq ft quieted down to just iron and null. It was like nails were feeding on its signal, it was Nickelish.

Hi Jeff,
I wonder if that wheat was on edge or tipped. That can really take the response down. On the clamp thing I think it is the shape that got the radiating signal going. Rings, washers and things with that shape really make the eddy currents/signal go wild.

The crusty coins arent just isolated to wheats for me Buffs and IHs can bounce all over the place as well. Like BF said so can coins turned on edge.... id say its because size is considered during processing.

You want to do which, dig one way wheat? Dig a razor blade? I am guessing Barber though. That is, I think, my fourth Barber Dime no Barber Quarters or Halves YET.
