One Year WIth The X-Terra 705

Hello everyone! It's been one year today since I received my new 705. Well, it doesn't quite look new anymore but I have to say that I've been having a lot of fun with it.

As of today I have found 1531 coins, a couple of 14kt gold rings and a few silver rings.

My oldest coin was an 1834 Half Dime, followed by an 1888 Indian Head along with a few pages of various silver coins.

For anyone thinking of buying a 705, I would highly recommend it. I had a used Tesoro Cortes that I owned for about 5 years and only used it about 3 times. I really wanted something newer with better discrimination like the 705 along with an LCD display so I just was never really able to convince myself to take the time and learn the Tesoro.

My Uncle was the first to purchase a 705, then I bought one and just a few months ago my Mother & Brother both sold their Tesoros and bought 705's. I'm not knocking Tesoro, just simply telling my story. They did great with them but were well past due to upgrade to something more modern and chose Minelab. They are both still in the learning stage with their 705's but I expect before long they will be seeing the same great results that I feel that I have been getting. I guess you could say that we are now a 100% Minelab family.

I'd like to thank everyone on the site for their posts which helped me make what I feel was the right decision to purchase the 705, and the ongoing exchange of information which I believe helps us all become better at what we enjoy so much.

Like you I'm convinced that the Minelab X-Terra-70/705 are among the best detectors. Congratulations on your first years finds. Best of luck in the future. HH TomB

What an impressive load!

About how many hours of hunting do you think it represents?

What % silver to clad coins ratio?

In what type of area did you find the 1834 Half Dime?

Sorry for all the questions but I would like to hear more.

X-70 and the X-705 never cease to amaze!

Good Hunting

Denny

* I think I'm able to get out more than most people. In the summer on week nights I was out between 2 to 4 nights out of the week for 2 or 3 hours at a time. At least one day on the weekend for 5 or 6 hours. Not every weekend but most weekends I was able to get that many hours in. Once winter came then I was done for the year although I did sneak one day in during December which just so happened to be the day I found the 1888 Indian. As of today, I've only been out 9 times since the beginning of the year.

What % silver to clad coins ratio?
* Of the 1534 coins, only 24 were silver. That's sounds like a relatively low percentage but what I think is impressive is that 3 of the 24 were from one old home site. The other 21 were from local parks which most people would consider to be hunted out. They get hit pretty hard by some detector clubs. I found a 1911 Barber dime in a park that has been hunted by my family members for the last 30 years and many other local people for who knows how long.

In what type of area did you find the 1834 Half Dime?
* The 1834 half dime was found in my sister's yard which is adjacent to the oldest house in her community dating back to the 1700's. Surprisingly, after 3 of us searching her property and the neighbor's, a merc from the 40's and a silver rosey were the only other silver coins found. I did find a small handful of wheats.

Mapper65, nice finds, especially nice when you can turn up silver. I noticed you have both the mid and high frequency 10.5" DD coils. Do you find they perform equally as well for coin hunting, or do you prefer one over the other? Are they better at finding coins than the stock 9". Thinking about buying a 10.5 DD and would like to hear your opinion. Thanks

mapper65,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

I live just south of Atlanta and what your info tells me is I got to take more time finding and getting permission to hunt on older property.

We have been very fortunate this year hunting a fresh water beach area est. in 1952.

It has given up 21 silvers and three gold rings 4 months.

We (my wife and I) go every weekend.

Oldest coin Standing Lib. Qtr. can't read date.

If you have any water nearby you give it a try.

Older property will be our next goal.

Good Hunting

To me, all of the coils have their own personality. I tend to favor the high frequency coils but use them all. The 10.5" HF DD is the coil that I use the most. I have found 90% of what I listed above with that coil. It seems like in my part of the country (Western PA) it is the best all around performer. I use the 6" HF coil in tight spaces or trashy areas.

The 10.5" DD MF coil for some reason is just not that good at finding nickels in our soil. The response when swiping over a nickel is just not as extreme as it is when using a HF coil. It seems to do best with quarters and dimes. Just yesterday I found 10 quarters and 12 dimes within about a 30' area and not one nickel. If I'm using the HF coil, I'm always pulling up nickels. If I completely cover an area with the MF coil and then go over it with the HF coil, I will always find a decent amount of additional coins including a bunch of nickels that were missed with the MF coil. If I cover an area first with the HF coil and then go over it again with the MF coil, I find very few addition coins unlike the opposite scenario.

The stock coil is the one that I used like crazy for the first month or so but I just feel like I have done so much better with the larger 10.5" coils. Since buying the other coils I hardly ever use it although I found the 1834 half dime with that coil. For me, this coil does not do as well with nickels as my HF coils do. I can only attribute this to the frequency and possibly our soil based on my results. My guess is that others may experience different results depending on their part of the country and what their soil composition is.

I don't think any of these coils are leaps and bounds better than their counterparts, just different from each other. You just have to use them, understand their characteristics and then choose the right coil for the task at hand.

Thanks for the informative reply. I live in SW PA also and know how tough our soil can be. I just recently purchased the 6" HF DD coil and was looking for a larger coil to replace the 9" stock coil.

Man you wore out a few knees of your pants. That is some good hunting.

Mapper65 and jimz49,

What #'s do you guys usually ground balance at?

My red clay Ga. soil normally GB's between 30 and 40.

Thanks

Good Hunting

Denny

It's very common for me to see a ground balance of 17-25 but it seems like the more damp the soil gets those number can jump up to the 32-38 range. I typically do not see below 17 or when the ground is really wet, above 38.
