Opinions on EXcelerator coils

Druid

Hello all,

I am a newbie with the Explorer and have been using my Ex-2 for a few months or so as the weather allows.

Rick ND has been kind enough to give me the benefit of his long experience, and I have outfitted My Ex-2 with an X-1 probe at Rick's advice.
My hunting partner and I have been working a lot of large turf areas of late so I also picked up a Sun Ray X-12 for that application.

I will buy another coil or two this year, in a smaller than stock size and am wondering about the EXcelerator 8" concentric, and 4.5X7" elliptical.
I don't see much in the way of forum chat about these coils however.
Do any of you Ex-Men use either of these coils and recommend them?

Alternatively I am looking at the Platypus coil, I sent Doc an email in December for info but did not hear back from him, Crikey! maybe he's off to Oz nugget shootin Eh.

I purchase both a joey and a WOT for my Sovereign off of him a couple of years back, and find them both to be good coils.

Do any of you use the Platypus on the Explorer? If so what do you think of it so far.
Any comments and suggestions appreciated.

HH,
Drew.

Select any COILTEK coil and pay for it, use it for 30 days, if it doesn't beat the snot out of an Excelerator you can send the COILTEK Coil back for a refund.

However, you have to get the people that sell you the Excelerator to give you the same guarantee, if you decide you like the COILTEK better, they have to agree to give you your money back when you return the Excelerator coil to them.

I want a head to head comparison, and you be the judge.

Thanks!

Hi Doc,

I have long watched forum discussions about "the big box store" with bemused interest. They seem to bat around .500 in customer satisfaction by my count, and I have followed some long threads over the years.

Suffice to say I have enough reservations that I have yet to do any business with them.

On the other hand I was very happy with my transaction with you, and would not hesitate to buy from you again.
I whole heartedly recommend you to my friends or any fellow detectorists, Nuff Said?

I am just curious about the EXceleretor coils made by Detech in Germany.
Monte, who is "The Man" has said some nice things about their coils for the Whites units, but little is said about them in the Explorer fraternity which makes me suspicious.

As to the Platypus I see it as my potential "general use" coil to replace the 10.5" stocker.
So what I will do is buy one from you as soon as funds allow, and I will happily post my results here.

Any plans by Coiltek for a 5" or 6" coil for hunting trash laden sites?

Regards,

Drew.

Drew;
If you are aiming for a smaller coil for trashy areas you will be hard pressed to beat the x-8 from sunray.
I have not personally used the coiltec eliptical coils but understand that they are top notch performers.
I have an excelerator 5" coil. It performs well but i find it does not suit my personal detecting style (too limited coverage area)and I just don't have the patience for it.

Drew,
I have used all the excelerator coils for the Explorer and can say they have done a great job for me. The 4.5 x 7 is a HOT little coil and does a great job. I had a problem with the 4.5 x 7 and Kellyco replaced it with no extra cost to me. The concentric is also one of my favorites. You ask also about the Platypuss coil and I will give you my opinion on that one. The coil should of been manufactured with tighter tolerances for where the rod attaches. The new one I had came with rubber washers to try to insert between the rod and mounting tang. I was not impressed to say the least. The joey coil is a good coil with the only fault I found is that it falses on heavy dew on the grass and I don't believe its waterproof? I have also used the wot and its a good coil. My three favorites of the excelerator line are the 4.5 x 7, concentric and 12.5 in that order. Hope this answers some of your question.

Hi Larry,

I think I will try that 4.5 x 7" as a medium coil for trashy sites.
We have a couple of old, high use parks in Vancouver that I have in mind for it which go back to the 1800's (sadly, that is old for us out here on the West coast).

I am quite curious about the 8" concentric coil as it is the one and only concentric wound coil for the Explorer as far as I know.

What has your experience been out in the field with that coil?

Do you notice improved discrimination characteristics? Better pinpointing performance? How about target depth and separation?

This enquiring mind wants to know!

That 4.5 x 7" EXcellerator is by far the BEST all around small coil I have ever used on an Explorer ... period. It can get down real close to playground equipment and such as that and will weed thru trash piles better than anything I've used, and with very respectable depth too. Pinpointing is dead on every time.
Not only that but it's built like a tank and still very light with a good fit on the shaft. Removing the coil cover is a piece of cake too. My Sunray 8" is my primary coil for parks but when things get trashy I break out the EXcellerator 4.5 X 7" and go to town with it.
Unless you try it for yourself it's hard to explain just how good it is.
Just my 2 cents worth :)
H.H.

Drew,
The concentric goes just as dee[ as the stock 7.5 in my soil. The seperation is excellent with this coil and pinpointing is just like all other concentrics. Mine is always in the middle. I have highly mineralized soil here and the coil still performs great even though its not a DD. All soils are different obviously and I can only tell you how it performs in my soil. I really think the 4.5 x 7 is a great performer also, but it just hasn't had the exposure yet like some of the other coils. I have to agree with Mike that it is built like a tank but its still light. I also read your other post and as far as Monte goes, he doesn't swing an Ex anymore.

I like to use the detech 8 inch concentric coil especially when looking for deep silver coins on "worked out" parkland trashy sites.
Once you get to know the tones that your explorer makes when your coil goes over a silver coin it makes sniffing them out real easy.
The 8 inch concentric coil offers good target seperation and good depth i can get small silver down to about 7 inches with the 8 inch excelerator. The explorer is the best detector ever made for finding small silver coins on worked out sites- this is what i really like about the explorer, it seems to have the magical touch at finding silver. The standard coil i dont like as much on trashy sites though.

I have one of those too and after a while my explorer goes nuts but I cant find any bad connections etc. Have used an ohm meter attached to the cable and everything checks good when I flex the cable every way from tip to tip. Was wondering if maby I don't have a cold solder joint behind the plug in the control box.
Do you have any problems with yours?

Mike

This particular cache had 19 Silver dollars with the oldest being an 1883. I did find another cache on the same farm site with 7 Silver dollars in a pint mason jar. That crock in the picture with a sterling silver spicket on it is what the coil picked up.

Thats some nice cache. Congrats!!! Think a 14/15" coil would have located it also? Gonna take your advice and give the 4.5x7 a try.
