Oriskany...

Pete in MI

New member
Ever hear of this name? I'm watching the Military channel on TV and they are talking about "the U.S.S. Oriskany...named after the town in New York with the same name that was where the bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War took place."

Did that peek anyone's interest?

The U.S.S. Oriskany is underwater down around Mexico and divers are checking it out. It was an aircraft carrier and the tower alone was 5 stories tall (from deck to top of tower).

What is most interesting is the comment about the Revolutionary war battle.

Here's a link about the Battle of Oriskany:

http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/79oriskany/79oriskany.htm

From this link I read this: "No episode better captures the brutal civil war in the Mohawk Valley than the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777, where neighbor fighting neighbor transformed a quiet ravine into a bloody slaughterhouse."

OK find that ravine and I bet ya will find a lot of items.

So Joe G - ya anywhere near Oriskany? Could be interesting to be able to detect in that location.

Hmmm...maybe detecting is not allowed:

"Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site and Fort Stanwix National Monument, two of the thousands of properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Both properties have been designated National Historic Landmarks."

Wish I could get the history channel! :(

now ya have fast connection, here is the History Channel website:

http://www.history.com/

You'll find they have videos there...some of what we talk about from time to time.
