Oscilloscope

Been thinking of buying one. Which mhz should be good enough for detector use a 100 or 250 or other? Thanks, John

Hi
I think an oscilloscope of about 20mhz is sufficent for metal detectors,a hameg scope is a good starter which is very easy to use.

Does it take a special scope to read the 10us delay time of pulse detector or will any 20 mhz. scope work? Thanks William

...O-scopes you can buy is the Tektronix 465/475. These things are built like tanks, and are far out-lasting the later Tek 22xx series. I have 2 475's, which are 200MHz. I forget what the 465 is, slightly lower bandwidth I think. Eric would know.
These things have a continuous presence on ebay, and sub-$200 prices are pretty common.

Hi
All you need for metal detectors is a oscilloscope of about 20mhz but must be dual trace so you can display the back emf curve and the delay sample.

The 465 is 100mHz. I agree, it is a very good scope with a bright trace. I use mine nearly every day and it is more than adequate for the most sensitive PI. Sometimes though, I go over to my 7000 series Tektronix as this has four channels and I can look at the TX, delay, both sample pulses and the interpulse delay, simultaneously. These can be picked up up quite cheaply too, although they are much bigger.
Also have an attachment for my PC, which converts it into a two channel sampling oscilloscope. This is useful for saving waveforms for putting into reports and test instructions.
Eric.
