Painted upper shaft of my SE

I had an explorer II upper shaft with the Sunray probe switch attached. I painted it flat black to match the plastic locking mechanism. I used it white on my Quattro and didn't care for the two tone effect. I looked cheap like a car with a door the wrong color. I thought Gloss at first but once the upper shaft is removed nothing else is Gloss all flat black. Anyway kind of a stupid post. But what am I going to do buy a gloss black upper shaft send it to Sunray to install my present probe? I like the effect.
What have other people done? If I was artistic some airgun work would be hot.
Another question comes to mind has anyone painted the plastic probe itself? I was worried I might ruin the electrical field of the probe as paint has lots of different materials in it.
Took this pic for the Sunray forum thought I would add it here.

Hi Redrock,

I have an Explorer SE on the way ( should be here on Wednesday )I thought about doing what you have already done (a can of flat black auto paint). I don't know about painting the probe itself, on your unit it looks OK white, nice to see someone thinking the same as me.
It looks good.
All the best.....Boony

Can't keep my eyes of my sleek lookin' black magic wand mate...

Good for you...

Redrock, your idea of painting the upper shaft black appeals to me too,
it doesn't look too good stuck on an otherwise black outfit...
I might go that way too.

I am going to have to get black ties. I got a bag of the whites when I had it on my Explorer II.

Yeah Redrock,I got the black ties to match the black machine, the light colored upper shaft spoils the appearance though.
Good Idea of yours,I gotta get some matt black paint and do what you did.

A reply to painting the probe itself. According to Sun Ray.....make sure you find a paint that will stick to the PVC material of the probe shell. Also make sure the paint contains "no lead". Most if not all paints no longer contain lead, but check to make sure. Your local hardware/paint store should be able to discuss those issues with you. However, as a final note, if the paint you apply interferes with the probes operation, be prepared to strip the paint off!

I painted both the upper shat and the probe with Rust-oleum Black Hammered Paint as it matches the Carbon Fiber of the lower shaft. After the probe dried I over coated the Probe with clear simi-gloss polyurethane. Let the poly dry for a couple of days as the longer it dries the harder it gets before snapping it back in the holder. I have several trips on it now and you will get a few scratches in the clearcoat from grit on the probe where it snaps in the holder but none have gone through the clearcoat so it has stayed black.

Just curious if you knew if there were any paints safe to paint the sunray probe with. I have a new SE and probe on the way and was thinking of painting the probe flat black to match. I asked Ralph at Sunray and a dealer and they said if should be fine to paint it as long as it will stick to PVC and it dosent have any metal in the paint.

The only paint I have found so far that I know sticks to plastic is called Krylon but I am not sure about the metal content?
