pennies in the hole

This is just my 4th. day out in my back yard with my new 705-the snow has all melted. I've been finding alot of iron but I did happen to find these 7 pennies all in the same hole. I got a solid hit & dug my hole, flipped out the plug & I see this penny. I used my Garrett pin pointer & it beeped so I dug with my hand & found another penny. Checked again & found another,so this went on again until I found 7 in all. Is this a rare event or beginners luck? All 7 are from the 1970's long before I lived here. I also found a 2001 quarter but other then that just nails, bottle caps,a bolt & lots of nails. Not the best finds but I'm brand new to this so I thought I would share.

Great place to start in the back yard...Your first finds are your best....but they get better!!!,,don't forget your Friends, neighbors and family's homes.Good place to work out your tones/tid...If you have other coils mark your targets with a golf tees and try them on the targets before you dig.
When I got my first detector 7 years ago Xmas morning....My back yard looked like hogs had been rooting in it for days by dinner time....found every penny,nail,washer,bolt,etc.....What i did find that was a complete surprise was a diamond pendent lost by my girl friends mother 8 years before during a party. As many find out, your own yard could hold great treasures....GL

Better than 7 pull tabs in one hole:laugh:. Great start! Sounds like you are on the right track. :detecting:

Congratulations on your first pocket spill! :clapping:

Just stay at it, go slow, and listen carefully.

It has happened to me a few times. I just wish I would find that many silver coins in one hole. Glad to see you are enjoying your new detector.

Yup,this is beginning to be alot of fun but I'm digging alot of muddy holes. Some parts of the lawn are so muddy that when I dig a few inches down I hit water-it's like a bowl of mud soup.

Question.....when I hit a suspected target,my TID display shows a -6,-8 then I'll get a 30,42,44 then back to -6,-8 as I x over the target. When I dig these targets it's usually a nail, washer, or some other type of iron. Are these false signals? I'm in all metal, multiple tones, auto GB of 55,sensitivity of 25. The higher numbers are just split seconds while the low numbers are more constant as I swing over the target. I baried a dime, nickle & quarter to see what coins should really sound & look like but when I see these higher numbers & tones I feel I need to check it out (on the susected targets). Do you dig when you only see the "higher" numbers without seeing the -6&-8 numbers? Is this what Digger discribes as the wrap around affect? I do have alot of trash on my lawn. I've been using the 9" 3kHz concentric coil, would a DD be better for this situation? Sorry....thats more then one question.....

ok first off I would stick with the stock coil because of the high GB numbers you are getting in your yard. That says that you have super mild ground " in your yard". when you start going out to other places to MD like parks, schools and other yards and at most of those places you start to see a lot lower GB numbers like in the 20's and lower then you might think about getting a DD coil, but hold off for now.

the numbers that you are asking about is what they call the wrap around affect. the best advice I can give you Since your new to Mding is to keep digging everything that beep. That will help shorten the learning curve. You will learn a lot faster at what signals are good to dig and what ones you pass up.

good luck and have fun

The GB numbers that I get seem high but I auto GB's several times & they always come in in the 50's. I also would like the lawn to dry out some more so I'm not digging in mud-hopefully in the next few days.

High numbers are a good thing! Remember, on an Xterra the higher the number the milder the conditions. I never see numbers in the 50's. I'm tickled when i see high 30's.

I'm going to reread the manual, again,on ground balancing & see if I'm not doing something wrong to get those high numbers. The first day that I used the MD I was getting numbers in the low 30's but yesterday I was getting 50's.....what could I be doing wrong? Is it rare to groung balance & get 50's?

50's would be rare around here, but may easily not be unusual in your area. If you're using the Tracking feature it's hard to do anything "wrong", as the machine is doing all the thinking and making the necessary corrections as you go.

Just got in from detecting in the back yard on the same area that I've been practicing on,this time using tracking & it worked out well. I also experimented with auto GB & I get 50's & one time I got a 77-has me scratching my head. I also got a 27,now this is a small area-maybe 20 sq. yards or so. Man there sure is alot of junk like copper wire, pull tabs, bottle caps,a copper strap, some kind of chrome off a bike but I did find a 1974 quarter-yaaaa baby. Oh well I'm starting to get the hang of it & I'll move to other areas around the house, there's alot of ground to cover once it drys out more.
