A Red Book would help. Get one.

Briefly. (There are exceptions to this rule.)

Pre 1964 dimes, quarters and halves are 90 percent silver.

1965-1970 half dollars are 40 percent silver.

1942-1945 nickels are 35 percent silver. (Some 1942 nickels are normal composition.)

Get a Red Book.

Chris

Only 1943 one cent coins are magnetic.

1964 dimes quarters and half dollars are 90 percent too. My sentence should have read pre 1965 or 1964 and earlier. I knew what I meant but I can't expect you guys to be mind readers.

Chris

They still mint 90 percent silver coins for collectors. I got a 90% silver state quarter in change once. You never know what kids or crackheads will spend or lose. Thats why I say you MUST have a coin collecting resource book at home.

I got 2010 Ofical Red Book of us coins
i guess thats the one you meant

anyway thanks again for all the tips

Happy and SAFE hutning to all

Good purchase. I hope you have to use it soon and that you find a nice "Key Date coin." Best I've ever managed is a 1926S Merc in F to VF. I'd call it a "Semi Key." There is some interesting reading up front in the book and I like to pour though the later sections on coins to figure out where I might want to take my coin collecting next.

Did you get a small scale to weigh jewelry yet?

Chris

Yeah there's a lot of strange stuff floating around out there that the Mint sneaks in on you. I finallygot a letter from the Mint regarding my silver SACS stating that the gold color on them can be removed or converted to silver appearance by mechanical or chemical means ( which I already know and have done ) but they didn't explain why they put that phony gold color over a perfectly lovely silver finish. They finally returned, with the letter, one of the converted coins I sent. After I nailed them about the second one they are now looking for it.
