Periscope

Could someone explain why the method that the probe Periscope uses to ID metals is not in use on full size PI detectors.I find on my CS-6 I can tune out(down) a gold ring, or maybe my question should be does the Periscope ID as good as they state.

Here is one that I can answer. The Periscope samples the receive signal at about 5uS after the transmit pulse. It is Verrrry tough to make a full size coil for a regular PI that is fast enough to do this. This is due to the capacitance between the windings etc. The Periscope uses a tiny coil wound on a shaped ferrite core. The effect of the entire coil being underground also makes a difference to the operation of the detector. It may be possible to use the same signals in a full size detector. However, there are a number of problems which will need to be resolved. I am working on a very similar method here. I hope to post the results shortly. Jim and his wife are EXCELLENT engineers, It would be great to hear their opinion. Dave. * * *
