Back in September on 2011 we were offered a chance to detect the grounds of a club owned by a local fraternal organization. We weren't sure what we were getting into but we knew that nobody had ever been allowed to detect this area. I was just told the other day that they started using this area in 1958.
What we found was for lack of better terms that this place was polluted with coins. My first two trips yielded 265 coins. You couldn't go two or three feet without finding a coin or two. It was just my Mom and I the first couple of trips and Hotrod53 joined us on one or two occasions. We found so many coins from the 60's and earlier for those of you that have read some of my previous posts, but this site has only ever turned up one silver. I found a 1964 Rosie. I found a couple of of small 925 rings but I've been on this quest for silver ever since we started there. I've never found so many pennies and nickels from the silver era but only that one dime and no quarters or even a war nickel. I even have a few small handfuls of wheats.
This site is easy for me to get to so I've been there 11 times in hopes of finding more silver. The other night I pulled up a 1968 Canadian dime which is 50% silver. I came home and added up the coins that I had found and was surprised when I discovered that I had found nearly 500 coins. Being that I'd spent so many hours there I decided that I would try and top the 500 mark and be done with the site. Today I spent about an hour and a half and really struggled to find some coins but made it to 504. My Mom and Hotrod53 have found at least another 200-300 between the two of them so combined we've got about 800 out of the site.
I had three days that I didn't write in my log book what coins that I found although I did list the monetary value. I found $26.11 total with a documented 27 quarters, 177 dimes, 28 nickels and 262 pennies along with 60 undocumented coins. Being that none of these coins were coins from a sand or sawdust pile it's hard to believe looking back on it that I dug that many coins.
I can't see me going back there for awhile unless I'm really bored or can't find a place to detect. That was a lot of digging for $26 but the promise of silver had looked good for such a long time that I had to stick it out.
