PI as a relic / coin hunter??

How would a good PI machine stack up as a general purpose machine?

I currently have a MXT and DFX and really enjoy using them. To 'round out' my collection I am thinking about what PI would add.

I mainly hunt CW relics in varying ground in Georgia and VA. Sometimes I go to the beach and coinhunt there, and sometimes I go to old homes and parks and hunt coins. I dont do much gold hunting / prospecting - though I really like to.

I am considering a ML SD2200V2 or a GP3500 get some depth in hunted out CW areas and to play around with, - how well would one stack up against my DFX or MXT?
What would be pro's and cons of using PI for relic and coin hunting?

Hi Popsmoke

I thought I would add my 2 cents here. I have used a SD2200d but not the GP3500. There are a few relic hunters who use the GP3500 for CW sites with great success. I guess you can ID buttons and bullets with the tone ID. PIs are always really hot on low conductors. However, metal ID of the GP3500 is rudimentary compared to the MXT and we are talking deep holes here. God knows I certainly won't want to dig the deep signals in a park with a GP3500. Certainly the advantage a PI has over a VLF would be over highly mineralized ground in CW sites.

Relic hunting with a PI hasn't really caught on basically because of the iron ID issue and because of the cost.

You know I have always wanted to try some CW relic hunting with my GS5(Eric's PI). The GS5 I feel is better for iron ID than ML's PIs(Yes you can distinguish a plate from a tin can which I doubt a ML PI can do). If you ever need a partner next spring with a PI perhaps you could look me up. Have PI will travel.

Good Luck
George
