PI - COMPARISONS

What is the major difference between Eric Fosters PI detectors and the Minelab PI detectors, besides the obvious price

As no one has come in on this I'll give a K.I.S.S. answer. The majority of Erics machines are aimed at the beach/salt water detectorist offering extreme depth, the ability to handle any wet sand conditions you might encounter and are either light and well balanced or if heavier, are in a chest mount form.
He then has his land based gold machines and also the S.S. models that provide good performance on land or beach at a very low price by the use of different coil types.

Minelab P.I.'s I can only consider as land machines optimised for gold in extreme conditions and they do tend to produce a new model every two years or so. You only have to read any Australian forum to see there seems to be one step forward/one back with each introduction. User comfort/light weight etc always to to be a factor that Minelab give little consideration to. Perhaps the X-Terra range means that there's going to be a policy change in the future (though even here they could have balanced the machine by putting the batteries at the back).
