PI Detector on Dry Land

Smudge

New member
May seem like a silly question, but does a PI detector get the same incredible depth on dry land as it does on the beach since it is not affected by ground mineralization?

PI detectors are very much affected by ground minerals that is why Gold prospectors use PI units with ground balancing ability.

Look in at prospecting forums to see what detectors are most used for this purpose.

There's posts on most of the non specialised forums saying that P.I.'s are unaffected by ground mineralisation. When someone has found a hoard its "Get a pulse and mop up the rest of the coins". If the P.I. hasn't got a ground control the result is that the signal that's nice and sharp and deep on the beach becomes wide, shallow and mushy.

The other big no no is for VLF's. "Detect slow and low". Fine for BBS or two filter designs but more filters require a faster sweep speed and bad ground conditions can mean that its better to raise the coil.

Drawback of forums is that people look for rules and there's always those ready to provide them in black and white where detecting is a distinctly shades of grey according to what your searching for, the type of ground and the equipment used.

Good information Thanks.

i have had some good finds on dry land with my cs4pi.the club i am in have been doing the same fields for years.ive found the extra depth a pi gives finds stuff that the motion detectors cant get down to. so there is an advantage to using a pi on land.and of course lady luck is the main player.bill

My Surmaster PI seems to pick up pretty deep on dry land in my area. I had hits as far down as 2 ft when my brothers minelab wouldn't even pick up the signal. Only draw back is mine doesn't show what it might be so after I dig a little he would use his minelab and see if it was garbage or not. worked good as a team.

I've done a couple informal head to head tests on dry land comparing my minelab excal 10" to a garrett sea hunter mkII (mono coil) and recently a whites dual field 12" coil. Done in a "buried coin garden" that was layed out a couple years ago, each type of U.S. coins @ 4", 6", 8", 10", 12". Also had a 10" deep buried nickel in wet sand next to the lake and a gold ring at 10" buried in a bag. Neither pi machine could detect as deep at the excal on any targets tried, including iron targets big and small. I've read about the impressive depths the pi's are capable of, but maybe the pi's need that conductive salt water/soil to do it? I was bummed out about this, I was hoping to dig some mega holes with the dual field at some lake michigan beaches that are currently "cleaned out"!

I don't know about dirt but on the beach an excal won't even come close to the holes I dig. No way no how.
