PI in fresh water question

I heard something about PI's being dificult or a pain in fresh water. Is this true?

you need to take into consideration that PI detectors do not discriminate.
This non-discrimination issue will give you greif in most fresh water conditions. Iron & junk that would erode away in a year or so in the salt water, are still there from being dropped 50 years earlier in fresh water hunting conditions.
Most PI detectors will do well in fresh water, there's a question as to if the detectorest can do OK with it.

My Goldquest SS PI works perfectly in freshwater streams here in New Zealand ... I doubt there would be a better detector anywhere, for detecting streams.

Freshwater gives no signal to cause a change in threshold with waves or depth. Also, there is the potential to be able to use even shorter sample pulse delays. However, as Mr Bill says, lots of iron trash can give you grief. All depends on where you are. Your NZ streams are obviously OK in this respect. What goodies are you finding?

The season is just about to get under way here in New Zealand. I prefer to detect the back country where there is no trash in the streams. However until the snow clears I'm not venturing into the back country (it can be life threating at this time of year if I was to get caught out overnight) except for a few day trips. The remote back country streams have no other metal in them except gold ... so this obviously makes detecting very much easier. The New Zealand back country streams would probably be the only streams left in the world with no iron trash in them.

A good VLF detector running in all metal mode is more sensitive and will go deeper in fresh water IMO. In areas with deep sand and not many targets all metal depths are awesome. When I get a deep sounding signal, switching to disc and fanning the bottom a few times with my foot is all it takes to get an ID on most iron junk.
In all metal or disc, I feel the VLF's are the best solution simply because you have both options available. The Goldquest SS is a great machine for the money but as Mr. Bill stated it is not the best choice for most fresh water situations.

Let me just add a little bit to this. The VLF may be a better option in the fresh water because of the discrimination abilities. If one encounters any degree of mineralization, the performance of the VLF unit tapers off, and the PI starts to become a better choice.
This is going to be a user option. A lot of the fresh water ponds, and lakes have a heavy layer of mineralization on the bottom of them. If they are targets in or below that layer the PI unit starts to look a lot better. There is a middle ground from good VLF performance, to good PI performance. Only your experience will be able to decide where, and when to use either.
