Pi Pro- smaller coil= better sensitivity

Mark L

New member
I have a PI Pro, with the 9.5" coil. It doesnt pick up really small gold, like pendants, etc. very good. If I could build a 6" coil for the PI Pro, would that make it more sensitive to smaller gold objects. Or would it make it to sensitive to work in saltwater? Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,

Pendants and chains are difficult to detect in a saltwater beach environment. This is because the saltwater itself gives a large signal and the pulse delay has to be limited so that this effect is minimised. In the PI Pro the delay is 15uS, and you cannot get much shorter than this without a lot of interference from the water in the sand. Even at 10uS, which my Aquasearch and Goldquest run at, many chains are not detectable, unless the links are chunky. If you go into the water with the Aquasearch, you need to adjust the delay back to around 15uS, otherwise waves and swell give changes in the audio threshold.

A freshwater beach would be different, or even in dry sand, and you could use pulse delays down to 5uS and pick up a lot more chains and pendants. However, I don't know of any commercial PI detectors that run at this, as the coil and electronic design becomes more critical.

A smaller coil on the PI Pro would not help much, as it is the pulse delay that is the limiting factor.

Eric.

I think I have accomplished this with the GQA2 somewhat in salt water. I had Mr.Bill fit an 8" coil onto the unit, and it runs smoother, with stability and I can run the Pulse Delay at 10uS, whereas it could only be run at a mark or 2 higher, with the 11" in the water before. I like it! GH

Most chains are found by the pendant on them, being a larger target(if it has one!) The small seperate lengths in a chain is all that is read and the Usec has to be low enough and Eric's are the only ones that would come close to that capability. Don

Yes, we were on the dry side of town. Areas on the NW side of the city were badly affected. We have had it dry and warm for a week now, and the floods have subsided. Hope it lasts.

Eric.
