PI tech.........................unsure

I have read a lot of the entries on PI detectors for beach, surf and underwater hunting and now i am really confused...... It seems that a lot of people have 2 detectors... 1 for down to the waters edge and 1 for in the surf and underwater..... i have used a minelab excaliber for many yrs. but i want to get a PI and see what all the fuss is about..... i have been researching the GOLDQUEST SS, INFINIUM LS and a couple of others..... i might get a goldquest ss for its array of contol and get a newer excaliber for surf and under water because i have had more success in the water than on land with it..... but what is the real advantages of PI as opposed to BBS technology.....

P.S.---------- I have looked into the PULSE 8X by jw fisher..... what can someone tell me about it because the people at JW are pretty closed mouth about it

The story in a very small nutshell....Depth and ability to deal with high mineralization are the main benefits to the PI. Digging junk is the drawback. That can be moderated by the newer PI's that have the ability to ignore iron. If you have clean beaches or are hunting in the water where there is less trash a PI can really shine. I dont favor a PI over a disc unit or vice-versa. I have and use both. There is a time and a place for both. As for the Pulse 8x the primary issue that I am aware of is that it is designed for diving, and its minimum pulse delay is higher to negate the large volume of salt water, however, this reduces its sensitivity to smaller gold, and impacts its depth performance on the beach and in shallow water. (so I am told)

OK.......... since there is a couple of, new this year, PI detectors out there with disc mode these would be the way to go in PI so that not a lot of trash is dug?????

Keep in mind the current discriminating PI units are not waterproof.....

very true................... i am thinking of getting a cheaper VLF for the beach and an AQUASEARCH from surfscanners for surf hunting... its control housing is submersible to about 7 ft.... i may end up having more money to spend than i thought........ i talked to a guy a surfscanners for about 30 min. on PI detectors and he really explained it simply and well on how PI works and advantages and disadvantages on using them on the beach as opposed to in the surf..... He even said a discriminating VLF would be a lot better to have in most circumstances than a PI because of the trash problems on most beaches and having to dig every target you hit with a PI as opposed to VLF w/ discrim............ they also have there goldscan 5c with discrim but its not water proof and it is 2700.00

If I am not mistaken, the Pulse 8X has a very wide scan area, and is basically used as a diving unit to search out large areas of water for bigger targets to try an isolate where ship wrecks, etc. are located. I don't think it is a good unit for beach or shallow water hunting as Crash indicated...the unit is probably tuned to disrimintate lots of salt water and its sensitivity to smaller, lower conductive targets is not the best.

Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong.

Also, the Garrett Infinium has some level of discrimination ( I have never used one), apparently is sensitive to gold and is water proof. There is a time and place for a PI. I just sold mine, not because it was not good, but because where and how I hunt, there is just too much trash and iron wire, nails, bits, etc. and my ratio of junk to good stuff was way too high.
