Pics of yesterday's finds and some of a plant that grew as.....

high as the eave of my house! Don't know what it was but since God seemed to plant it there I let it grow and when it budded and bloomed it was like a dandelion and white feathery blooms flew everywhere! Looks like I got my finger in the first pic of the plant! Remember, Ma goofs a lot! :)

By the way I found another penny in my pouch when I went looking for the bracelet! I use a Parmesan Cheese Container to put my coins in and once in awhile one will fall into the bottom of the pouch!

Glad I went :detecting: yesterday, for today has been cloudy, dark and dreary looking all day! I am not as sore and achy from bending over and digging like I thought I would be! Those pain pills are sure helping, as I hadn't been detecting since 2006, I think! I had been ill a lot and then Cliff was ill and needed cared for and taken to hospitals and drs! Kinda had to relearn and get familiar with my 1994 White's Spectrum XLT detector again! Remember Ma forgets too easily!

I don't know when I will be getting out again to go coin fishing, but I did get one time in so far this year! Nothing old to find where I go....anything silver or old has already been found by hunting and hunting there for many, many years!

Happy Hunting ya all! God Bless! Ma Betty

I have never found that many quarters at one place , Nice pictures also.

Thanks for the pictures, Ma. Again, I'm glad you were feeling up to being out and enjoying some detecting. What are you gonna do with those quarters? Spend them? Keep them?

As for the plant you're tending there next to the house, it's hard to say for sure without seeing it in person or having a really good closeup, but I believe it looks like it MIGHT be a fireweed plant. Also called burn weed, pilewort, and other common names. I couldn't guarantee it without seeing it, but I believe I'm probably right. I've spent my whole life in the woods and am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to wild plants, wildflowers, trees, etc. I also spent several years learning from the South's most famous and most knowledgeable herbalist, Tommie Bass. Tommie was a dear friend of mine and one of the most amazing and most interesting people I've ever known. Duke University thought so too! They did many indepth studies with Tommie and used his knowledge in writing books on medicinal plants. Actually, several books were written about Tommie; his life, his stories, and his knowledge. I have several items that belonged to him and count them as some of my most treasured possessions. All of that is neither here nor there, but I do think you might have a fireweed plant. If so, it does have its medicinal uses, but is really nothing more than a hearty weed. Nothing wrong with letting it live right where it is if you like it there! :)

We have plants like that around here. Not sure what they are called, but I consider them weeds since I dont want them. :)

I started typing this, then looked up the plant in one of my books. I believe it is in the Groundsel family. There are a couple of types. One taller than the other. Did you ever squish the flowers? If you did and they smelled really bad, that is what they are.

J.

J, I kind of think the Groundsel has a different type of leaf than the one Ma posted a picture of.

Lisa

The picture that I had didnt show the leaf as much as the flower. The multiple little flowers and the seed head looked the same. Your probably right though.

Looks like you still know how to use your detector. Never saw any plant that tall...well except poison ivy  Hope you can get out again soon. God bless ya Sis.

Nice finds Betty...and I'm glad you got some huntin' in.

We better enjpy it while we can cause' the nasty weather is on the way:rolleyes:

Ya done great and I know you were happy to get out!

Thanks Rick and I dug more holes than the coins found, but ground was so difficult to dig into as Ma doesn't have the strength in her hands and arms any longer, like I used to have; therefore, I just went after the larger coins which are easier to see when dug up! :) God Bless! Betty

Thank you 7centsworth! I have found a lot more than 20 in one day of :detecting: but it has to be where others haven't been there so much! I find schools are the best place for clads as the kids lose them all the time! :) God Bless! Betty

Thank you Steve! Well, I guess, Nancy only grows flowers and not weeds!! God Bless! Betty

Thank you, Lisa! I will need to clean the coins and then put them in my containers of change, which I spend as I need to do so! That way I am never broke! ;) :)

And thank you for the info on the plant! I didn't know what it was (although I was raised in the country of SE Missouri), I hadn't seen anything like it or if I did in the fields and woods, I didn't pay any attention to it or have forgotten! It came up where a Mum had died and I was waiting to see what it looked like or what the blooms were! After I found out I was going to cut it down, but it was uprooted by the heavy rains we were having before slow Ma could do it!

I have heard of the names Fireweed and the others you named but never associated the name to any one plant, even though I was raised on a farm and saw and cut down lots of weeds! I figured it was a weed but wanted to see what it would do and how it would look when completely grown! My neighbor, who mows my lawn, wanted to cut it down for me but I told him NO to please just let it grow! I will be digging weeds next year, if all those dandelion like blooms spread their seeds in my yard!

Sounds like you had a nice childhood and learned a lot from Tommie Bass! I'm sure what he gave you is precious to you for keeping! Close friends are a gift from God and we need to treat them as such! Amen! God Bless! Ma Betty

Thank you, J, I don't remember if I squished the buds or not, but the blooms would spread out into the air like dandelions if I tried to squeeze them! I let it grow just to see what happened and it became a very tall weed! The rains took care of removing it, as it was heavy at the bottom with shallow roots and just came out of the ground and laid on the lawn! That is when I cut it up and put it in the yardwaste bag! I dont like weeds either where I think they should not be------in my yard and flower beds! :) God Bless! Betty

Thank you, Bro Pete! I had to work with the detector at first to try to remember how to use the program setting I was used to using, so took a while to remember! The ground was just too difficult to dig in; so I just went after the quarters mostly, as I could see them better when dug! Dirty clads look too much like the soil they are hidden in! That plant was tall for sure! I didn't get out and replant flowers in my front flower bed, so the Lord let a short, little green plant grow with tiny yellow flowers that looked better than a bare flower bed! I was thankful, for that was the first time I had something in it, if the flowers from the year before didn't come up or I didn't get any new flowers planted! God is Good!!!

I hope and pray you are well soon and able to get up and about like you did when :detecting: and hope you get to go again before the cold and white flakes are there! God Bless! Sister Betty

Thank you, Bryce! I;m glad I was able to go Sat and finally be able to do some :detecting: for coins...even clad ones! It was very cloudy, dreary and rainy looking Sun and then it started raining after dark, rained all night and very wet out today with small ponds in the Common Ground! Don't know if I can go out again, as I am feeling it in me muscles and poor ole bones for sure, today! I'm not as ill though, even when I didn't sleep as well last night because of the rainy weather which causes me to hurt and ache but not as badly with taking a pain pill at bed time!

I've been wondering about you with all the rain we've been getting if your house is safe from flooding? I know you were having problems with all the water and did you go to the Midwest Coinshooters and Historical Club's Fall hunt this year? I miss going but just not able to any longer!

God Bless and Happy Hunting for those beautiful silver dollars and other coins....hope you find lots more! God Bless! Betty

Thank you, Mike me son, and Yes, I was happy to get out and get rid of some cabin fever, for it had been a long, long time since I had been able to go! Wish I had used the pain pills (although habit forming---sooo have to be careful) a lot sooner, for they sure have helped eased the pain and achiness in me ole muscles and bones....but, alas, I feel the soreness from Sunday's 2-1/2 hour hunt from 3:00 to 5:30 PM! Been raining all night and very wet today, so don't know if I will be able to go out any more this year! Winter is coming and wish to the South I could be going!! God Bless! Ma Betty

I didn't make the hunt this year Betty. After losing my mom last year..I don't get too far from home for any length of time because of Dad's health.

About an hour or so is as far as I let myself get away right now.

I am just hitting my same old beat up parks when I need some hunt time. I have heard though that next year the fall hunt will be back at Forest Park...so I would love to attend.

As for the water...I have had just a little in my basement...but not too bad thus far.

Take care....Bryce
