pin pointer problem

fdl

New member
I have a Garrett pin pointer that works great but lately it likes to beep at times when not around anything metal. At times it works great then for no reason start beeping.I changed the battery but it makes no difference. Has anyone out there experienced this same problem? Time to send it in for repair?

Yep! Send it in.
It sounds like a broken coil.....a rather common thread with Garrett ProPointers.
Sometimes a reset can help, but often not.
The colsest thing to a reset that you can do is to hold down the button when you first turn it on for 5sec.

OL.....as a side note I've been experimenting with it around the house, pointing it at various metal objects then turning it off & on. Can't recreate the fault.............go figure. I will send it in because it's been faulting too many times in the field.

fdl, Mine does it too when it's real hot out and when it's setting in the sun. I just turn it off when I do more digging in the hole or set it in the shade from my body. That helps a lil. if it's cloudy and / or cooler out it seems to work just fine. That's why it was working just fine in the house.

Could be a faulty ProPointer. But if you only notice it when detecting........ before you send it in, when it gets froggy in the field, try changing the noise channel on the X-TERRA to see if the ProPointer quiets down. If it is a specific channel on the X-TERRA, you might find another that works OK with the ProPointer and still provides good results with the X-TERRA. Just a thought! HH Randy

Good thought Randy!
I'm so used to pinpointers interfering with detectors that it hadn't even occurred to me that it can work the other way around.....duh!

Thanks Randy....I'll give that a shot & see how it works. I'll even shut off the 705 if the Pro Pointer acts up & see if that makes a difference.

I have a brand new Pro Pointer that does the same thing. I find myself turning it on and off with every couple of holes I dig. It starts off fine but will eventually keep beeping until I turn it off and back on. I did test it without the detector on and could not recreate the issue. So Digger, are you suggesting manually setting the channel or turning on the Pro Pointer than letting the detector pick the correct channel?

Either should prove whether or not it is an interference issue with the X-TERRA. Again, I don't know what the problem actually might be. I'm just guessing......but most of us have the detector up and running before we turn on the Pinpointer. That means we already have an operating channel on the X-TERRA. If you then turn on the pinpointer and it gets noisy, what I am suggesting is to switch channels on the X-TERRA to see if the noise stops. If the noise stops, you know that there was interference between the freq of the pinpointer and the channel you were using. You should also be able to "avoid" any interference if you do an Auto NC on the X-TERRA, after the Pinpointer is turned on. JMHO HH Randy
