Pin pointing question.

Can someone help me understand what is going on in this situation. I sweep across a target left to right and get a pretty solid tone then turn 90 degs. and sweep but get little or no sound. I think it's a common thing that happens with all metal detectors because iv'e seen my friend do the same thing and he doedn't have a White's. Thanks for any help you can give me. Mark

Hi Mark.
I'm still learning but i have seen this happen when i hit the edge of an iron halo.
a piece of iron can give a really good silver signal even if you are right over top of it. then another piece can give a really good signal if you are off to one side but when you sweep the other way it says iron or no signal depending on your settings.
a good target will be pretty consistent most of the time.
Be careful not to let a good target go,i have had situations where i almost dismissed a good signal after sweeping the other way and got an iron reading.try to make small sweeps. if i can get the smallest good signal in both directions then i dig.in a really trashy area most good targets will be close to trash,be careful.

Hi Jay
You've brought up another good point when you say that it looks like silver one way then like iron the other way. We're talking about the same things though. So I'm thinking at this point, if I don't get a good tone ID and VDI numbers in "both" directions I shouldn't be so inclined to dig. I guess my question is not really a pin pointing question so much as it is something that happens while pin pointing.

Hi Gopher,

When I sweep across a dime @4' in my coin garden (buried for 5 yrs.) I get a good signal when sweeping in one direction and silence when sweeping at a 90 degree angle. The coin was buried at a measured 5 inches and laying flat. Don't understand why it does that but I try to dig all signals that give a good signal in one direction. No doubt I will dig more trash but I'll also dig more coins.

I say dig it. You should try and airtest a few coins and rings. Place them flat and on edge and see what happens. I prefer zero disc, try that. HH

What was your VDI reading and how good were your confidence blocks when you got a signal and were you able to repeat the signal sweeping in the same direction?

Normally when you go 90 degrees and the thresh-hold goes silent or erratic there is a target but it is below your discrimination setting. When that happened to me I always used to switch to relic mode and sure enough, IRON!

You may already know this, just my 2 cents.
