Pinpoint vs discrimination

Could someone explain to me why the pinpoint mode on the Explorer is not as deep as the discrimination mode. It seems to be just the opposite of all other detectors where the all metal pinpoint mode is deeper.

I think its just as deep, but easier to hear the target in disc, especially with shallower trash nearby.. there really is no all metal mode, besides accepting all, and that more of a zero disc level with true 180 disrimination...

The Sovereign seemed to be that way too. Maybe the double D coil has something to do with it? Like Jim says.. maybe they are actually the same but disc just seems to get deeper?
