Pinpointing: 2500 vs ADS 7

I've been monitoring this site for quite a while, but didn't feel like I could contribute anything worthwhile. I've used Garrett detectors almost exclusively since 1969 and have used many different Garretts, beginning with the Master Hunter BFO, and finally decided to try some of the newer Garrett technology. About a year ago I bought an Ace 250, and have really enjoyed it, then for Christmas I bought a GTI 2500. My problem lies in trying to pinpoint with the newer detectors. I've been detecting around a 115 year-old house with the 2500 and have found silver quarters and an 1896 Indian head penny, lots of wheaties, pocket knives and a horseshoe, along with assorted other coins and junk. Whenever the target is difficult to pinpoint, I get out my old ADS 7 and find it right away. I've replayed the video several times, practiced on clean ground and made all sorts of adjustments on sensitivity, etc., but obviously I'm not doing something right with the 2500. I would appreciate any pointers you experts could share. By the way, I just ordered a Pro Pointer. Thanks. Jugg.

Im new but the advise i got was to jigggle my 1500
that sorta hleps the detector to read correctyl.. Once
I learned how to finesse my 1500 it hasnt been off by
more than 1 inch in any direction.Actually Id be the one off. I assume the
2500 would be the same.. I know that lots more
experienced folks will be able to help

All the pinpointing is done with the little receiver coil in the middle of the main coil. It's only about two inches or so in diameter so there isn't any room to get sloppy. Watch your signal strength indicator as you jockey the coil around. When the cursors line up all the way across the top of the display the target is centered and right in the middle of that little receiver coil. You can also tell by the audio when the target is centered. The GTI's are a snap to pinpoint with and one of the best on the market for pinpointing but as I stated, correctly centering the target is critical for locating your target and for accurate readings. You just can't get sloppy like you can with other detectors. Tape some coins to the back of a piece of cardboard and practice pinpointing on that. Use something sharp to poke through the cardboard to see if you hit it. With a little practice and patience you'll have it down pat in no time.

Another little tidbit of info regarding pinpointing with the GTI. Remember, in pinpoint "Imaging" will read the smallest and most shallow reading for the target. In other words, the smallest and most shallow image reading is gonna be dead center pinpointed on the target. I hope this makes sense. I don't mean to confuse. Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Hi Pennyfinder, I have a ADS7 and it quit working, sent it back to Garretts they fixed it said wire to battery came off, but now i can,t get that good bell-tone on coins like it did have. Is there something i am doing wrong, or did they turn it off? It has a bell-tone but not like it did. Before when that good bell-tone would go off i could tell it was a good coin. Do you know what could be wrong? Thanks Dean

Flintstone,

Coin Alert: When operating in the Trash Elimination (Discriminate) mode, a coin alert bell-like
tone will be heard when silver or clad coins are detected. This feature is not available to the
Master Hunter 5 or 6. It is an automatic function of the Master Hunter 7. This function on the
Master Hunters 7X and 10X may be turned off with the toggle switch located on the extreme
left of the control panel. When standard audio is selected, detected targets will merely
increase the ordinary sound level.

Some MH7's didn't have the" Belltone toggle", it just stayed on.
Also the Threshold Tone Adjust knob ( the little knurled one) will have a bearing on how the "Bell-like" the Bell Tone will sound.

Have you seen those new Rechargeable 9v Lithium batteries yet? Works nice for the Scorpion too!

I don't know if my way of pinpointing will help or work for anyone else, but I do the X and find the center, get the smallest and fullest readout like everyone else. Then I drag the coil toward me. When the sound begins to disappear, I know exactly where it is, right at the nose of the coil.....Coach C

Yup that's what I do with a dd coil like on the Scorpion, concentric coils pinpoint in the center of the coil.

Thanks PennyFinder, I will check to see if the toggle switch is on or off. I haven,t had this detector very long, but what time i have had it i like it. I know i could hunt in trash that no one would try, and when i got that good bell-tone i had a coin. Thanks Flintstone

The MH7 is a ring magnet on heavy mineralized beaches too if you get the chance, it ground balances anything.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request. I've put all your suggestions to good use, and have practiced on a large cardboard box. Though not yet adept, I've noticed a big improvement. A slight correction on my original post: I started out with the Hunter, not the Master Hunter, then got my wife a Playmate. We used both detectors as demonstrators after we started selling Garrett detectors. I took an elderly couple to an old school yard where the lady promptly found two rings with the Playmate, and the gentleman found two silver dimes! Needless to say, they ordered detectors on the spot. That was back in the days when finding silver dimes was no big deal, since many were still in circulation. There are probably still plenty of silver coins in that old Florida sand, but I live in NC now. Different times, different climes, but old houses around here abound with coins yet to be found. Good hunting! Jugg
.

Just one more question to OldRanger: what, exactly, do you mean by "jiggling" the detector? Thanks. Jugg

What I find works for me when pinpointing with the 2500 is to X the target and then raise the coil a couple of inches while still Xing the target. After several times of raising the coil the signal is getting weaker and I am locked on my target directly below the center of my coil. As mentioned earlier, Practice,Practice,Practice is the key to success.

Good luck, I love my 2500. It paid for itself the first year with my finds.
