Pinpointing with the WOT coil?

Tagamet

New member
Well, I for one am exhausted. I went out after work today to try out the WOT coil on my Expolorer II and dug some holes large enough to hold several folding chairs and a small child. The site is a good spot, but REALLY trashy. I had been picking away with the 5 inch coil and getting clad coins, but the deepest were ~3 to 4 inches down. With the WOT coil, I got REALLY deep signals, that "sounded" good, but couldn't pinpoint a single coin. When I put coins on the surface, it seems like the coil responds to the BOTH outer edges AND the center of the coil. I went back to the small coil and immediately started digging more clad. Other than memorial pennies, I found dimes and quarters that "ran" 1965,66, 67, 68, and 69!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Tagamet
PS I hope to soon have a Platypus coil on it's way (right buttondigger?)

I have a great idea Tagamet. Get all your friends to hunt that area with their brand X machines and once all the junk and clad are gone then the good deep stuff might be easier to pinpoint. I'm sure with all the other junk around it does make it harder to pinpoint with the WOT coil. HH......................:)

The 14" goes deep
and are you using a probe??
If not get the X-1 and your holes will get smaller
I also have a 12" and a 5" Excelerator coil.
I dont know if you've seen my finds,
but I'ld give the EQ2 Pro a chance
I know you wont be disapointed.
I'll bet money on it!!

Tagamet,

Pinpointing with the WOT is certainly tougher than the smaller coils. What you see with the three hits on the outer edges and center is normal; the smaller coils do this also. Lift up the coil until it only hits on the center.

I've found that in trash about the only way to pinpoint with the WOT is do an X pattern in regular detect mode - NOT pinpoint mode. There are generally too many targets under the coil, in pinpoint they all sound the same. You need to sweep over the target and visualize where the signal is and then rotate the coil and try again. Dig at the intersection.

I'm pretty amazed what the WOT can find in trash, but it does take a bit more work.

swing left and right and at the same-time pulling the coil back towards you until the signal fades out. Then the target is right off the front tip of the coil.

I agree about inviting other detectorists to help clean some of the trash signals away. Then the Explorer can go in and clean up all the deep keepers.

Hi Tagamet,

When I get a signal I keep moving the coil backwards until I just lose the signal I then know that it's just in front of the coil, I then move the coil forward and to the right so that the target is centre but to the left of the coil, I then hit pinpoint and move the coil left and right until I get a constant sound, I then turn to right angle of where I was and repeat the process in pinpoint mode until I once again get the constant signal I then know that the target is right under the Knuckle connector of my coil.
I hope this makes sense to you, I use this process with both the 15'WOT and the platypus (both clear & trashy Sites) and it works fine 99% of the time, on the odd occasions that I still can't find the target I use the probe, but I find sometimes I when using the probe I have to boost the sensitivity to get a signal.

Regards......Boony

Again, thanks all.
I do have a Sunray probe and a vibraprobe.
Is the EQ2 a DD coil or a concentric? Is it somehow significantly easier to pinpoint with?
Thanks in advance,
Tagamet
PS Getting others to clean out the junk might be "problematic" because in the summer this spot is a "dog run" with pounds and pounds of "organic deposits"

Don't Know Never got any response

You know I posted the same message. there was a thirty day back order when I ordered the 14"
they might have the 12" in stock
Is this why your not going with Kellyco

You can Buy the Excelerator Coils at Joan Allen Electronics http://www.joanallen.co.uk/ web Pg ( joan.allen@btconnect.com )E-mail . Thier in England ,but they will ship to the USA .

Is the 14 inch Excelerator coil significantly easier to pinpoint with than the WOT 15 inch coil? They are both DD coils, so the only reason I'd get two coils that were that similar in size is if the Excelerator had a significant edge in pinpointing. Then I'd sell the WOT.
Thanks,
Tagamet
