PI's for gold coins

I am looking for advice toward the purchase of an all around gold coin detector (if I could only afford one for land, beach and creek). I was considering some of the Minelab PI models but I can't seem to find much info on hunting cold coins with PI's. I did read that the Infinium was good on nickels which is a sign that it might be good at detecting gold coins but that is about it.

Hi Charlie,
I'm not an expert on pi units, I do know most Gold coins can be found with machines other than Pi. If my need was to search for only gold coins on both dry ground and wet sand, I would go with one of the proven land/beach detectors. The Explorer is a good machine for receiving gold coins as well as other proven machines. On land you're dealing with so many conductors as well with iron by the handful.
That's my take and maybe others feel different, Hunting on land changes things a bit.
Good luck,
HH, Paul (Ca)

Thanks Paul.
I am getting more and more interested in the explorers but dont know if I should get the xs or Explorer II. Do you know how weather resistant they are and are there any submersible coils made for them?

Hi Charlie,
With a meter cover, the Explorer can be use under light rain or with moisture in the air such as fog. The stock coils are water proof and respond under the ocean surf better than the after market coils. The 10" stock is my preferred coil for both land and sea mixing in the Joey coil for demos and tight areas with trash.
The Explorer XS is a fine machine and can be picked up at a bargain, even a new XS "when you can find them" are around $700.00. I can't give my two cents worth on the Explorer II but have read positive reports from others. When you mentioned wanted to search for gold coins and I'm assuming both wet and dry land, That changed things a little. With so many small good as well as bad conductors on dry land I feel the Explorer or another detector will be better suited for your needs.
Now for surf hunting, I prefer a good Pi over the Explorer. Good luck and keep us posted.
