Detector Pro's new pistol pointer bears an interesting resemblance to their PI detector. It might be possible to deconstruct it and build a proper PI detector from it. By the time you bought all the bits needed, it would no doubt be impractical, but if you had a junk box plus the will to make your own coil, it would be an interesting project.

Any thoughts?
