Plated and Non-plated gold jewelry

Hello jewelry hunters and everyone one else who might give me an answer. I just recently started doing more coin & jewelry hunting. I mostly do relic hunting. My question is probably pretty simple for you experienced jewelry hunters but not so much for me, i recently have found a couple "gold" rings and don't have anyway to test them, they look different in that one looks like gold and the other looks like 'not so much' and they both had an id about 28-30. To the question, " does Plated id different than Non plated? Also for you experienced gold jewelry finders what is the usual difference between the two? I was thinking since Plated probably has copper or other type metal as primary it would conduct higher than non plated....Also they have readings inside but really can't make them out, even with a loupe.

You can't really go by ID to tell if a ring is solid gold or gold plated. your heavy gold rings will ID in the 30's just like if it was a gold plated ring If you can't read what is inside the band then I would take it and have it tested to know for sure.

Thank you Mark in S.E. IA, appreciate your answer. I guess if i am going to jewelry hunt i'll have to get a test kit or take anything i find to a jeweler. Again your answer is much appreciated.

you never will know by the TID# if its gold or not....lower # can be thin gold bands or ladies rings with stones.High # could be large heavy bands or class for an example.Gold plating can be on nice silver based rings and is usually marked 925...Gold rings look gold...no flaking, corroding or metal expansion and they just look right....Plated rings don't take long to show there true colors,a little time in the ground with some water and fertilizer they start to break down. They,as you say.. don't look right, and are poorly made. Thanks Mark in S.E. IA & bob.oz. Appreciate you guys answering my questions about the difference between plated and non-plated gold jewelry.

I haven't ran enough gold rings past an xterra to help you with the vdi question, but if it IS gold, most of them will be marked with the Karat value inside the band, ie, 10K, 14K, 18K, etc. Plating is done in different ways and can be marked in several different ways too, I think. Such as GP for gold plated, or RGP for rolled gold plate. Probably others that I can't think of. Anyway, nice find. Any ring is neat to find as it has the potential to be one worth some $$$. Old coins, jewelry and tokens are among my favorite types of finds. Hope you find lots of keepers. Good luck and HH. Bob.
