[size=large] Hello Gary,

Hoping you can help... I found this belt plate while metal detecting in central Virginia 3 weeks ago at a old stone chimney in the woods. It was 8" down in sandy soil and 6 miles from the battle of Cumberland Church (near Farmville/Saylors creek) in the final days of the war.

I cannot find this plate in my relic books or on the internet after three weeks of searching (that's how I found your name).

I have posted it on five Civil War relic forums and sent letters like this one to half a dozen "experts" of CW relics... but no one can ID it. It has been suggested that its a Missouri Vol Militia plate or anyone of the other "M" states but no one can nail it down. Seems I have discovered a new species? Any help or insight on this plate would be greatly appreciated. I have wore the internet out looking for a match. It will on the June/July cover of "American Digger" magazine.
Thank you,
Vernon Cross
