Possible that a coil is bad ?

I have a 705 with the stock coil 9" 7.5KHz concentric. I recently bought a 9" concentric 18.5 kHz . I tested both coils to see if the 18.5 kHz would pick up small gold and I really couldn't find a big difference ?? (this was tested in the back yard). I then went to the beach(soft sand) and found that the 18.5 kHz was a little better not much.
While a friend says it should be a big difference! Is it possible this is true. When I tested I left all settings the same and just switched the coils....Then I gave each coil their new settings and found no big difference at all. I did use a thin gold woman's bracelet and still didn't find that much of a difference. Can anyone explain ??

Thanks Ron L

Leaving all settings the same is part of the problem. You will not realize the different characteristics of each frequency if you never allow them to be seen. Beach tracking and Prospector modes would be a benefit when beach hunting, and adjusting sensitivity to the site conditions is pretty worthwhile too.

That said, a 9" coil isn't the best for small gold. A smaller coil in that frequency will be significantly more sensitive, and a DD will work better at the beach or anywhere that magnetic/conductive mineral levels are high.

Thanks for that. I realize the DD is better but I'm comparing the two 9" concentric coils and was asking should I see a big difference between the two on a small gold.

example if the 7.5 kHz doesn't hit the target should the 18.7 kHz sound off with a solid hit. I'm experiencing very little difference.

Small or fine gold is the toughest target to hit with consistency. When comparing those two coils, what the HF coil offers is cleaner more consistent response and more stable ID, but not necessarily a stronger hit.

From an ex Minelab tester, to all intent and purpose, to see major differences between a M freq and a H freq is hard at the best of times.

OK now I completely understand! !
I was looking for way to much difference.
Thank you
