Possibly naive question on pinpointing.

I have a "V" and when I pinpoint with the "red button" on the V and dig, I usually find the target either in back of or in front of what I thought was the center-point using an X pattern of pinpointing. Maybe it is just me with bifocals! Anyone else find that the target is not where you thought it would be? I also use the Garrett pro-pointer which seems to be more accurate to locate the target.

Is that using a concentric or DD coil?

Concentric coils are easier to pinpoint with than DD's.Widescan coils are hard to pinpoint with. This is common.Tesoro detectors are well known for very good pinpointing ability's.It will get better. It happens to me all the time.More so with a DD.Sometimes i just see if i can get a pinpoint with the pointer before i even dig.I got a pulse induction pointer which is pretty deep.I can hit a coin size target at five inches with the pistol probe. The stock 9x8 concentric does not pinpoint as good as the 8" doughnut coil.I need a 8" for my Tejon myself.Keep at it. :-$

In my testing I found it much easier to pinpoint in discrimination mode. (it pinpoint in that center little hole on in the coil)
In all metal mode any other metal object around the target and it will pull you off.
Also. I found out that if the target is near the surface and the coil is really close to the ground you will get THREE target responses as you move the coil over it, (Beep, Beep, Beep) if you have this happen just raise your coil up an inch or so, and you have also just found out that the target is a surface target (or very near it).

That is so right! Pushing the pinpoint button to pinpoint can make it worse.I have to go back and forth with the Tejon. In the disc mode,i also find it easier to just stay in the disc mode.I just switch to fast retune all metal to listen to the target in all metal. The only time i have to use all metal to pinpoint with,is if the target is so faint, cracking,Very deep, very small target. If i get a decent target in the disc mode,I find it easier to just pinpoint in the disc mode.Very well explained mark. :-*

Well I can say pinpoint is far difrent than disc, as far as pinpointing, two diffrent animals, especialy with iron near or close by Iron sounds off on the edge of the coil and on the tip a good target in the center

The previous comments are spot on! I never use the Pin-point button either, I always Pin-point in Disc Mode, and as MarkCZ mentions, raise the coil on targets near the surface. Another trick on near surface targets is to lower the sense which also helps and with the coil nearer to the ground it will give a more accurate pin-point.

I am going with the rest of the guys above, first try to PP in the disc, if I have trouble I go to all metal PP.

Now I will just add this for understanding. Some read that Xing as a long full swings and try to eyeball the center spot on the ground. Now that may work for some but I find when PPing if you short stroke like a couple of inches, try to get it to respond about inside that small center hole, same for both disc and all metal mode.

When PPing in disc I find it stays on the actual target that I detected better, if I use all metal I can be pulled off target to near by junk.

I might be misundeerstanding you, but you say you never use the pin-point button but you pin-point in DISC mode. Please clarigy.
Thank you for the other tips.

It's called x-ing. It's very precise and can be done quickly. No need to to waste your time with a pinpoint button.

The Tejon has two different all metal modes.Fast retune pinpoint all metal mode,A slow retune all metal mode.Don't ask we why i just said that?Ok,a Tesoro can actually pinpoint better by just staying in the disc mode. But when you sometimes dig the hole on small type iffy targets i have to then hit the pinpoint button. The target is so small the only way to find it is go into all metal mode to locate it,even if you got a pointer. All metal can get a wobble type signal at depths. The disc mode has a finer, narrow type signal.I got the Detector Pro pulse induction pinpointer,That can detect from the surface 5" down,a quarter and i still have a time myself,i really like to test with the pointer before i dig, this also gives me more information about the target. o_O

Just leave it in disc mode and use little short swings over the target, just like in the video.
You can even slow the sweep speed down from that a bit.

I just leave it in Disc. mode as well unless i'm getting another signal right beside the one i'm trying to pinpoint, then i'll flip it to all metal and and just drag the coil very slowly across the area so I can separate the two targets. Then once I have them separated I use a short "plus" (+), not an "X", motion to pinpoint in all metal. But most all the time I just leave it in Disc. mode. I've found the "plus" (+) motion works better for me. Just personal preference I guess?

Best tip I can give is ... Raise the coil till you get as high as you can and still hear the beeps , the coil is somewhat cone shaped this will allow you to focus just on a small part of the center of the coil , making it easier to pinpoint. :goodnight:
