Power/volume control knob location

Power/volume control knob location seems to be in a very vulnerable spot. I wonder how long it takes to one to damage the component, as the knob is not protected at all against accidental hits.:detecting:
 
Why would the control knob be any more vulnerable to damage than the h.p. jack?-----I've had several detectors with the h.p. plugging in that position & never had a problem at all with damage to the jack from hits, etc.
