After being away from metal detecting for a couple years I have lost some of my brain's sound discrimination ability.
So I got a large piece of card board and cut it in to 4" by 3" strips. Then on one side,I taped a variety of objects on each, like: an old penny, nickel, quarter, half dollar, pop tops, rusty nail, etc. I also combined objects like a pop top and a dime etc. I made 22 test strips (and add more all the time). Be careful not to accidentally mark the the side opposite to the object so you will not be able to identify the object before detecting it. I also have one test strip with nothing on the other side. (It is a real fooler when someone else practices with these strips.)
Practice
Spreading them out on clean ground (object side down), I detect each strip. I also use the test strips to experiment with different Explorer settings.
Though this will not provide help with deeper detection sounds, it will help with identifying objects closer to the surface.
