[attachment 159885 presidential_token_4-19-2010--school_001.jpg][attachment 159886 presidential_token_4-19-2010--school_003.jpg]Went to the school soccer field late yesterday evening. Got some clad and a Presidential Token. Does anybody know anything about them. Seen one on ebay. Mine is for Harry S. Truman. Has his pic on the front, with the years he served and the his presidential number. On the back it has his personal info and some bio on him. Is this something like the Shell tokens? This appears to be made of bronze. Again the pic is not good.

They gave the Presidential Tokens out at Gas Stations but the ones we rec the best I can remember were made of Aluminum and not bronze! There may have been some of bronze though! May God Bless! Ma Betty

Mine is different than yours Rick. Pretty solid coin, and is bronze not copper. I saw pics of them, but have not found any info as of yet. I am sure Mike will have some idea when he reads this post. I like the token you found. The aluminum ones we used to get at Shell back in the 70s.

I just gave a dozen non-dug ones to the kids hunt on Saturday. Most of the ones found today are Shell or Sunoco tokens that were gave away at the pump.
I like finding them.

Haven't found any Presidential tokens but have found other tokens of local businesses offering discounts at certain times of the year, etc. and I found a Mary Kay Cosmetics token last year but it is likely made of bronze and it's about the size of a silver dollar.

Neat find - historical items are so much more interesting than the same coins. I started a display of dug ones some time back. Don't know exactly where they were issued. Steve in so az

DK,
I too found one of these presidential tokens here in Montana years ago when I first started detecting. Mine is of Benjamin Harrison with his profile and 23rd President on the front and "Backbone Ben" and Son of His Grandfather and accomplishments on the back. Is about silver dollar sized and is colored a deep red, whether by oxidation or human hand, I'm not sure. Was always curious as to origins but thanks to guys like you and the other seekers, I guess now I know a little more than I did yesterday. Thanks for your posts and hopefully I can continue to learn to appreciate all the past has to offer. Have a good one and happy hunting.
Mike

Welcome Montana Mike glad to have you with us and posting....but maybe you have been on here before...just don't know for sure! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

Most were handed out at Shell and Sonoco stations in the 50's and 60's. There are others also.
I have found several, and bought a big box of tokens with over 100 of them in it.
Hope you post more.
God bless.

Mike

Ma Betty and Iron Mike...thanks for the welcome. I am definitely more the novice than an expert but enjoy the hobby immensely when I can find the time. I only recently discovered this site and hope to learn from others with more experience. I like the anticipation of the hunt and the excitement of finding something not seen for possibly many years. I may have to upgrade my detector and devote more time and maybe get the children involved, as well. Have a good day, everybody, and may all your prayers be answered.
Mike

You are welcome Montana Mike and getting children involved is a good thing and then you can enjoy outdoors together with surprises when you swing the detectors and dig what is hidden from sight for a long, long time! It is a thrill and lots of fun, but I am not able to go :detecting: any more due to my age and illness and I sure do miss it! I loved being out among God's creations and talking to Jesus as I swung and dug up something nice by giving Him thanks and praise for the find and the opportunity of being able to do so, but all things do come to an end, and I think mine has and, yet, when I get enough energy I may try it again, for I sure enjoyed the hobby! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty
