Pro Pointer just arrived:detecting:

My X-70 came with some extras...including an Automax V4 pin pointer. Because it was bulky and awkward, I didn't use it for awhile. Once I did, my recovery times sped up.(according to youtube videos, my automax is better than usual)

After doing some air testing with my new Pro Pointer, I'm really excited. MUCH better range on aluminum cans and better on coins. The "coin on the side of the pointer" trick will work well too.

Much more compact and it came with a great holster.

My only complaint is the price.(Yes, I got a good deal on it.) Plenty expensive for what it is.

Looking forward to digging some coins tonight.

I'm convinced that the Pro Pointer is a "must have". Be sure do a quick search on the forum or web to learn how to make it a little more sensitive but sliding a coin or ring down the side of the pointer. You don't need to do that every time but is some cases when a coin is a little deeper than the plug that you dig, it can be very helpful. You may even be able to find a You Tube video showing how to do this.

I use the blade of my Lesche Digger, instead of a coin or ring. Since I already have the digger in one hand and the probe in the other, seemed like the natural thing to do. For those not familiar with the procedure, next time you open a hole and the target is still too deep to detect with the ProPointer, simply hold the blade of your digging tool up against the edge, and near the "top", of the ProPointer. Slowly start sliding the blade down the shaft of the Probe until it starts to vibrate. Then back it off just a touch, until it stops vibrating. Holding the two together, slip the Probe into the hole and you'll be surprised how much more depth you'll get out of it. JMHO HH Randy

I am also thinking about buying a VLF Garrett ProPointer because my PI Pistol Probe interferes very badly with my PI GP-3000. But for my VLF X-70 the PI Pistol Probe does not interfere with it and it sure goes deep and I love it.

That technique Randy explained about:
"ProPointer, simply hold the blade of your digging tool up against the edge, and near the "top", of the ProPointer. Slowly start sliding the blade down the shaft of the Probe until it starts to vibrate. Then back it off just a touch, until it stops vibrating. Holding the two together, slip the Probe into the hole and you'll be surprised how much more depth you'll get out of it."

About that technique above, I wonder what is the exact reason it makes the ProPointer go deeper.??

Being that the pointer's ground balance type setting and other sensitivity adjustments are automatic, by sliding a metal object down the edge of the probe it kind fools the probe's automatic functions and being that it's always re-calibrating itself while its on, the end result is more sensitivity. Why it gets more sensitive and not less, I don't exactly know but it works.

I always wear a cheap silver ring on my right hand so I've gotten used to moving my hand down the pointer a little until it just starts to chirp and then move back up slightly towards the battery compartment and then I'm good to go. I'm happy with the normal depth of the Pro Pointer but every now and then I find myself using this technique when the pointer is not sounding off at the depth of the plug that I cut.

Finally got to try out the Pro Pointer today. WOW...my recovery times shortened considerably!!:clapping:

Yes, I have gotten used to mine now and can almost not due without. Unfortunately the audio hole seems to clog a lot, especially in this rainy Pittsburgh weather this year. I still kinda stink at pinpointing with my coil, most times I can pinpoint on top of the grass and it saves me a lot of time. Keep an eye on the holster if you use it, the opening gets enlarged and it can fall out when your bending over or climbing over things deep in the woods. I lost mine once but was able to find it. I think that I'll put a bright red stripe on mine with tape.
