program help for a newbie

I would like to make a program for a specific area.

1. Do I begin the program starting with a specific factory program?
2. When I save the program, how to I assign letters not numbers for the name?
3. Will the following set up be acceptable for small gold rings and any silver coin (for a heavily used130 yr old outdoor stage area)?

This is what I would like to do: 18kHz, reactivity 3 or 4, and 3 tones (lowest [tone] iron-39, 64 mid., & 40-60, 86-97 highest), silencer 4?

I have the 3.2v with an 11" coil, the ground is sloped (to view the stage) and has low mineralization.

If you have v3.2 you can go to an empty slot after Prog#10 and make your own. It will ask you to enter a program name - enter it and then you can set your specifics from there. Start with Reac = 3 so you won't sacrifice too much depth. 18 kHz will hit the small gold very well, but also will light up any and all aluminum trash! Maybe 12 kHz is a compromise but this is a personal preference. If you have the patience to dig a lot of junk then I'd say go for it (I dig a lot of junk everyday!). Remeber too that 18 kHz won't spread out VDI numbers as much vs 8 or 12 kHz, the breakpoints you have selected will work great for silver coins, but gold is so much more variable - kinda depends on what you start finding. I would think also that silencer on "4" would inadvertently squelch out small gold items if they are at any depth at all, like a stud earring for example. But then again, I've never hunted using 18 kHz so someone else may have better insight about this...

When you are naming the program simply scroll with the + and - keys on the control box to select numbers -or- letters.

Buy Andys book he has a good gold program in there along with several other good programs. the book has a wealth of info in it you will not regret it.

I always tend to cringe when I hear people calling out programs by name . . . and not looking at when the individual settings are for each as that is really the key. Remember that Alain and his team used input from mostly non-US hunters to develop the programs in the Deus. As a result, some of the settings are not optimal for the US challenges which are unique. I know when I was in Europe last year, I had to rethink the way I was setting my detectors due to the ground conditions and types of targets we were searching for . . . but if you understand the functions, making on-the-fly adjustments is a snap.

Looking at your proposed settings . . . ." This is what I would like to do: 18kHz, reactivity 3 or 4, and 3 tones (lowest [tone] iron-39, 64 mid., & 40-60, 86-97 highest), silencer 4?" . . . a few comments.

1) If you are in an area where you have aluminum trash (pull tabs, foil, etc.) running at 18 kHz will drive you nuts do to the sensitivity of the Deus to these targets . . . if you are looking for coins and hoping to find jewelry, stick with 12 kHz.

2) Silencer = 4 . . . . you will trade of fa good deal of depth running at this level . . . . try the Reactivity at "3" and Silencer at "2" to see how it fares for you . . unless the targets are not all that deep but rather masked by trash. I hunted a site last year that had Indian Heads at 5" yet a ton of trash had kept most hunters from attacking the site.
