Prospecting Calaveras County

Can anyone give me some info on the Mokelumne river in Calaveras co near west point. I'm checking on a placer claim there and thought I could get some info before going there to check it out. Questions like does this river have high flowing water year round? Has anyone done any panning or metal detecting in this area and what was your outcome? Any info would be appreciated.

Thats where im from. I lived there 18 years and mined there the entire time. My father has also mined there for that period with the same results. This is my general reaction. There are thousands of gold mines in Calaveras county. I have found gold dredging in the rivers before the ban. Panning has been mostly a loss. I have never found any gold detecting there, however I have only picked up detecting in the last few years. The biggest nugget I got was about 8dwt, this was with a 5" dredge. But it shows that there is findable gold there. There is very little mining in the area now. The south fork is entirely private. The middle fork is almost entirely private. The north fork is mostly open to mining but is mostly difficult to get to. The only real operation around is Roaring camp. It is situated on part of an old tertiary lead and doesent really work the river. I have heard stories of success on the north fork but have never met any of the people.
