Pulsepower Update

Here is a short run down of what has been happening at Pulsepower over the last few weeks. I have now moved from Abingdon, near Oxford, to Brixham, which is on the south Devon coast. Brixham is an old fishing harbour town with good beaches and diving within easy reach, which will be ideal for trying out new beach and water detector designs. I shall miss the Oxford area, where I have lived and worked for many years, with its colleges, technical libraries and bookshops, but being near the sea has its compensations, and I have a fine workshop for development and production.
I expect many will have noticed that my website has now gone. It was in urgent need of updating anyway, and a new one will be appearing shortly. I will probably do the design myself and arrange it so that changes and additions can be quickly incorporated. Although my participation on the PI Forum has been rather less of late because of the move, I am pleased to see that it has been active and lively with PI questions and answers. Particular thanks to Mr Bill, Reg Sniff, CarlMorland and Brian Forrest who have dealt with technical and user questions.
In any move, there is a disruption to all aspects of business, and many things take much longer than anticipated. No detectors were produced for over a month, but now things are getting back on track. I was fortunate in quickly locating a good assembly and test engineer, without whom I would still be struggling a bit. During March we produced a couple of industrial PI detectors for a factory in Germany and this past week, a batch of Goldquests, five of which will be winging their way to Surfscanner Detectors in the next few days. We also have some on the shelf for the UK and customers in other countries. A few Goldquest Aquasearches are next on the list together with a couple of Woodtec

I know what you mean about the Oxford area, Blackwell's book shop is the most impressive I've ever seen, bar none. The Oxford library is equally phenomenal.
Hope things are going well!

Is the Aquastar more water proof than the Goldquest Aquasearch,or is it safe enough to dive down with a snorkel mask on to recover a target from the bottom if I was wading out up to my chest.
GOOD LUCK ON THE BEACH!!!

The Aquastar is in a full pressure housing and all the connectors and controls are rated to 100ft plus. Although the Aquastar electronics is not optimised as a diving detector, the rugged housing and pressure rating give it a large safety margin for shallow water searching.
The Aquasearch, however, is a much smaller and lighter detector, so such a rugged housing is not required. Likewise the smaller control seals do not have the pressure rating, but I cannot see any problem with the unit being used for shallow water searching in water depths to six or seven feet.
In the next week or two, I will take a Aquasearch and lower it on a line off the Brixham harbour wall into, say, ten feet of water and leave it there for a couple of hours so that we can all be confident. The water is too cold at the moment for me to do a hands on, and feet in, test
The UK price has not yet been determined, but will probably be around

Eric... Have you considered putting the Pulse Devil Mono in a HH PI housing? Seems like a good idea if workable. Would save on cost, while giving good water depth protection... Jeff

Eric designed the circuit for the HH PI, so why not a HH PDM. Call Gary.

I am good friends with Gary he has noting to do with it.
The Pulse Devil is not Eric's detector, and it's not even being manufactured for sale yet.
Dave Emery is doing the Pulse Devil.

Bill... First of all, we were told on this forum that the Pulse Devil would be manufactured by Eric. Has that changed? When I said, call Gary, I meant for you to call him and recommend the PDM for development. In other words, if feasable, the PDM would be a nice addition to the DetectorPro line... Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I never remember seeing that Eric was going to manufacture the Pulse Devil. I do see that Dave was going to send Eric a unit to check out, when he has one to send. Looking around in this world I would say nothing is impossible but I doubt this would happen, but again, stranger things have happen.
Have a nice day.
Bill
Ah ha there's my email address. It was missing before.

Dave Emery posted the following on Jan 10th.
The first prototypes are about ready to go. Eric Foster will be testing, improving, and if he feels the design is OK, will I imagine be building and selling them most likely with a new name. My thanks go to Eric Foster and also to Mark Pauls in Denmark for their substantial input on both designs.

Hi guys, The Pulse Devil has been a VERY long time coming due to severe work pressures here. I am at last doing some ground testing with it and I hope to get it off to Eric soon for his evaluation. I am sure that Eric can also improve the design. If Eric feels that the detector is good enough, he will be producing it although it will be sold under a different name. Again, it is that four letter word "WORK" which has delayed the detector for so long. The current design uses a Dual D coil and has a fully variable VLF type discrimination control. Hope this explanation helps, Dave. * * *

Hi Dave,
Look forward to the Pulse Devil arriving. I am now in a super location for testing under all conditions; beach, water, magnetic mineralisation etc. We even have fossilized red desert sands here in Devon. Good manufacturing facility here too, and some good local labour.
Not sure what name I will give the detector, but I will think of something appropriate for such a quantum leap in PI technology. Maybe there will be different names if more than one model is required.
I appreciate the fact that this development has all been done as a sideline to your normal work, and hope that all the midnight oil that has been burned will prove worthwhile.
Readers should bear in mind that there is still a way to go from evaluating a prototype, to having a machine in production with all the necessary tooling and jigs. I am not one to rush things to market and then find that problems come back to bite you. Testing will be thorough and all stages will be reported on this forum.
Eric.

Hi Jeff,
I think that the Pulse Devil will need to breath. As I understand the circuits, shoe horning it into headphone cups and running on a small battery will severely restrict its performance. Let's do a standard version first and then see what variations are possible.
Eric.

Eric,
The quantum leap was yours when you made the PPD1 some twenty plus years ago. I have used the same basic technology with improvements including a fully variable discrimination control.
Of interest is the fact that the Pulse Devil has two seperate ground balance circuits which work on two different priciples. I am hoping that this will be extremely useful for prospecting.
As you said, it is going to take a long time from when you first test the detector to improving it and getting it ready for production. Readying a design for production takes a long time.
For those with an interest in PI's don't wait to buy a Pulse Devil. Get your tails out there with one of Eric's world beating detectors and find enough good stuff to buy the new machine when it finaly comes out. I have been working sixty plus hour weeks which is why the detector is so late.
All the best to everyone and happy Easter, Dave. * * *

Hi Eric,
Good luck with your move, you are now spookily close to me in Cornwall. I shall have to look you up when you are completely settled in.
Tell us how the red sand reacts to Detectors especially when wet when you get some free time.
Beachcomber.
